How do itraconazole and fluconazole compare for pet safety?

If the vet has confirmed that your dog has systemic fungal infection, then itraconazole is the right medication to use. Usually, dogs needs from 4 to even 15-18 weeks of treatment with itraconazole to completely get rid of bad fungal infections.

It's true, the possible side effects are very scary. But this is true of most antifungals and unfortunately they are the only treatment for aspergillosis. The appropriate dose should be determined by your veterinarian who is familiar with Marley's medical history. It could take weeks or even months for the antifungal to start working, depending on the severity of the current infection. If he is really struggling, I would urge you to call your vet to see if additional medications or hospitalization for oxygen therapy is indicated.

Assuming Bruno weighs more than 30lbs the dosage is actually borderline low, I personally do not like Fluconazole, I usually prefer to use Itraconazole which I find more effective and safer, but at this dosage you do not have to worry about any severe side effects.

Fluconazole has been found to be very safe in dogs and the most common side effects are loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. Seizures are not a common side effect of Fluconazole. If your dog is healthy and took the fluconazole with no problems than it is unlikely to cause seizures in the future.

Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. No the medication itself does not cause pruritis (itching). The ringworm infection however does cause itching, especially as it is healing. Ringworm also is best treated with both a topical and oral medication for faster results. I hope that your furry friend gets rid of this ringworm infection soon! Best wishes and take care.
