My dog has a fungal infection. What oral medication should I give?

If the vet has confirmed that your dog has systemic fungal infection, then itraconazole is the right medication to use. Usually, dogs needs from 4 to even 15-18 weeks of treatment with itraconazole to completely get rid of bad fungal infections.

Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. Fungal infections are pretty tough to manage. If it seems to be lingering, the best way to get rid of it is to get everyone on an oral medication prescribed by your vet. With this many pets, this can get pricey, so ask your vet for an alternative medication that you can purchase from your local pharmacy (i.e. Terbinafine). I would still continue with a topical ointment as well for the most effective treatment of this fungal infection. Also its best to shave around the affected areas, since the fungal spores like to hang out in the haircoat and spread further this way. Hello. With lesions on or near the mouth, the easiest way to treat ringworm is with one of several antifungal medications that Maho will take by mouth. Anything topical, as you said, may be licked off, & because ringworm is contagious to other pets & people, you want to eliminate the organism as quickly as possible. Many yeast and or fungal infections can take a while to improve. Veterinarians often start with topical therapy and often that is all that is needed. However, if the area is larger, not improving, bleeding, or otherwise seems worse than sometimes oral anti fungal medications and sometimes a cone to keep them from licking are important nest steps. Poor Bruno. He should be on oral anti-fungal medication +/- topical antifungal cream or shampoo, depending on what areas of his body is affected. For really resistant infections often pets need extended time on the medication which can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks. I know it's tough to be compliant for that long, but it may be necessary to clear Bruno's infected skin completely and for good.

You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement or in the meantime this appears to be getting worse, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night!
