Could my Husky's sudden heavy breathing be a sign of heat stroke?

Panting is a way of regulating their temperature so panting alone is not necessarily concerning. If at any point you notice other signs associated with that such as inappetence, lethargy or difficulty breathing then have him evaluated. Good luck!

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If he is panting and coughing following excessive play only, then this is not a concern but a normal physiological response. However if the panting and coughing is continuous and not seen during these particular instances, and if it i has been going on for more than 3-4 days with no improvement, then he could have an upper respiratory infection which generally is easily treated with a short course of antibiotics. Poor Rea! I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what you are seeing. Constipation is not common in dogs and can actually be diarrhea. Additionally, constipation is not expected to be related to temperature and may be a completely different problem. You need to make sure Rea has access to air conditioning or other cooling measures. She also needs an area with plenty of shade and water. Huskies are certainly able to overheat more easily than other breeds due to their thick coat. All of the clinical signs could potentially be related to something like that as well, but could be an indication of something entirely different. If there has only been episode of vomiting and some mild lethargy, I don't think it is entirely unreasonable to take a wait and see approach. If the rapid breathing becomes even more labored or Midna actually appears to be in any true distress, I would not delay and would take her into the veterinarian as soon as possible. As of now, it sounds like she's still eating, drinking, and functioning pretty normally. Keep a close eye on Midna, particularly the breathing, and should it worsen have her looked at right away.

This sounds normal. Nursing stimulates the release of oxytocin, which in turns causes uterine contractions. This can be painful, leading to the breathing you are seeing when nursing. Given that everything else is fine, I would not worry.

The most common symptoms are lethargy, weakness, panting and vomiting. Development heat stress symptoms 6-8hrs after a walk is rather unlikely but definitely possible. Ideally you should to take Maisie's temperature (human thermometer is fine, but it has to be measured in the rectum) and if it is above 104F, it will be heat stress. In that case you should cool her down and take her to your local vets.

This is an emergency and Husky needs to go to the vet as soon as possible. Dogs are very good at masking illness and will only be lethargic like this when they are severely ill, or in shock. This can happen from an infection, heart disease, lung disease, metabolic disease, brain disease, or poisoning. The fact that Husky is breathing fast is very concerning that she is not getting enough oxygen, which can quickly become deadly if not treated appropriately. The emergency clinic will be able to ensure that she is well oxygenated and can determine that cause of this problem. I hope everything goes well and Husky gets better soon.
