My husky is moving to a hot climate. Can they adapt to the heat?

Hello. Under the right circumstances, a Husky can live anywhere. If your home is air-conditioned or shaded with lots of nice breezes, this would be perfect. But as long as you keep the dog very well brushed out to remove all of the undercoat & he/she has a place to get out of the sun, you will be fine. He can live inside without problems but he will need to be walked one hour a day when not too hot. No special devices needed, but certainly Vuki needs to have access to cold and well ventilated spots during summer time. Croatia can have cold winter seasons so your husky will mostly enjoy those times!

This is a big change for Rocco! He need time to adapt. I would suggest to let him inside till you go to bed so he doesn't see you awake within the house and doesn't get stressed because cannot interact with you or your family members. Sometimes they do not like to sleep in the brand new house, they just don't understand what changed compared to before. Add some toys and treats to make the new recovery even more comfy. Dogs can adapt to running in hotter weather, however going out at times where it is cooler, packing enough water for your dog to take breaks and drink on the way, and using items such as dog booties to protect feet from hot surfaces can all help ensure the run goes smoothly for you and your companion. If it is unbearably hot it is best to leave Fido at home where he can rest in some shade instead. Dogs are just like people, so you'll want to work up to a longer exercise routine over time, rather than starting out on a big long hike or jog at once that is likely to exhaust and overheat your dog. Dogs can sweat through the pads of their feet and also release heat through panting, so ensuring they're given enough water, and even something such as a misting spray and shaded areas for breaks to take a moment to cool off can help.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luna. You will want to walk her in the early morning or late in the evening when it is hot outside. Be careful on concrete or asphalt as it can burn her pads. As opposed to a specific amount of time, I go off of how the dog is feeling each day. If she begins slowing down or if she becomes sluggish, you have gone too far. A dog will pant when it is warm, but this should not be excessive. If she is actively seeking out shade (under a tree for example) and laying down, again you have gone too far. Be sure to carry water and offer it to her frequently. I hope this information helps!

Hello, and thanks for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Coming from a fellow Siberian Husky owner, I think you could do great with this breed. I can tell you’re already thinking about how to provide enough mental and physical stimulation, which is the most important part of having a high energy breed. They can do just fine in a smaller house, as long as they’re given enough opportunities to run! Keep in mind though, that many huskies are escape artists, and often find their way out of fenced yards. I personally had to invest in an invisible fence in addition to the chain link, to keep my little runaway contained! The invisible fence taught her to stop testing the chain link. Your dog will likely need to have some good stimulation before and after your work days if it is kept in the fenced area alone, such as chasing a ball or going for a run. This is a difficult question to answer because it's all based upon her and your temperament. Huskies in general tend to be very active dogs who can become destructive when bored. They need lots of daily exercise to meet their energy requirements. They can also be very vocal dogs. Keep in mind, every dog is an individual so she may not act like this. ANY dog who is bored may develop bad habits. Being an outside dog means that she has been able to run around and has likely not experienced much structure in her life since she was not inside with the family. Living inside means rules, structure and routine. It's also unknown if she is housebroken or not. Taking on any pet is a big responsibility. Many huskies live indoors just fine. If you decide to adopt her, you will need to commit to daily exercise and be prepared for some bumps along the way. You may want to take off work for the first week so you can be home with her as she adjusts. You may also look into doggie daycare or a dog walker to come by and check on her during your work day until you know how she is adjusting.
