How to manage a high-energy puppy recovering from neuter surgery?

We normally recommend activity restriction until sutures are removed (if sutures were placed, these are normally removed around 10 days, sometimes up to 14 days later). I would call your vet and follow their guidelines since they performed the surgery and know what is safest considering his procedure, but in general we keep them with restricted activity for 10-14 days. Short walks at a slow pace on a leash are alright, but no running/wrestling/jumping. In some cases with dogs that have a high activity level, vets will presribe medication to help keep them calm/quiet so if this is an issue with Kapano you can ask your vet about a sedative.

Give pain medication as prescribed by your veterinarian. It is important to make sure that you restrict his activity to short leash walks only (for the purpose of going to the bathroom) for the first week after surgery. Excessive activity such as running jumping or playing will increase the likelihood of complications. Lastly, but most importantly, he must wear an E collar (cone of shame) to prevent him from looking at or biting at the incision. Licking or biting the incision could lead to the incision coming apart and a need for further surgery. It could also lead to the incision becoming infected which could even make him systemically ill. When you pick Reddington up after his procedure he will be a little sleepy from the anesthesia. You will want to keep him inside and very quiet. You will probably be able to feed him a small meal if your vet says it's ok. When he needs to go outside to potty you may even want to keep him on a leash if he tends to get really excitable in the yard. You want to make sure he does not lick at his incision, so an e-collar (cone of shame) is a good idea. Make sure to give the pain medication your vet prescribes to keep him comfortable. The total recovery time is about 10 days. For that time you want to keep him relatively quiet , no off leash walks, wrestling with other dogs or baths.

Hi there, and thanks for posting this question. The first night is usually a little rough, but after that they seem to bounce back so quickly! Make sure your veterinarian sends home some medication for pain management and an E-collar. Those are never fun, but it is worse to be half way healed and then have him Chew out all his stitches and have to start at the beginning again! Short leash walks are great to keep his brain active when his body is supposed to be resting. Also, chew toys help too. Best of luck and he will be healed before you know it!

I would get a well made dog house that is insulated against inclement weather for him to recover in. To keep him calm during his recovery, it is best to ask your vet for a medication called Trazodone, which is meant to calm pets post surgery. You can also look into a more natural product called Zylkene, which is available online. The only concern with leaving him outside is that he will have the ability to run and jump, which alone can lead to him opening up his incision. Anxiety is huge and often requires anti-anxiety medication and always requires some form of training. In some instances, training will not be effective until you start some sort of medication so I recommend speaking to your vet. Finally, even though you do much more than many owners in terms of exercise (great work!), it still may not be enough for Stitch, depending on his breed and demeanor. Consider dog parks (once neutered), having him run along a bicycle, etc. Finally, give it time. Many breeds do not settle down until 2-3 years of age, but most eventually do settle down. The calming chews should be fine to give but you may not notice much effect from them. Typically a vet will send home pain medication (and a sedative if needed) after a surgical procedure. If you are worried that Charlie is showing signs of discomfort (panting, whining, restlessness) then you should call your vet and request some additional pain medication.
