What healthy foods can I add to my dog's dry kibble for nutrition?

The dry food is more nutritionally balanced but you can add things to it to make it more exciting. You can add any of the above ingredients you use to feed her in her fresh diet. I would advise to only add one at a time (ie...one day its peas, another day chicken, another day carrots) so that she doesn't get use to it. You can also add warmed chicken broth, a table spoon of a canned dog food or the ground up loaf type dog foods like Fresh Pet. You should not give him any human food. The best food to give him is a complete dog food for large size dogs, preferably a good brand. Pumpkin is a good additive as it adds fiber and makes his stool voluminous, helping with digestion and evacuation of the anal sacs. There is no need to add yams or peas to his food if it is a "complete" food. You can feed boiled carrot pieces or green beans as treats.

Fruits may cause GI upset. Add some warm water, low sodium chicken broth or a teaspoon of baby food to his regular food to stimulate his appetite. If he doesn't begin eating again, have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury.

Hello. I do not think there is anything that gives us more pleasure than cooking something special for our pets. There is absolutely nothing wrong with adding a little chicken, brown rice & sweet potatoes or pumpkin to her kibble, as long as the majority of her diet is the dog food. Dog food companies go through some rigorous testing to make sure a diet is healthy & more importantly, balanced, which is almost impossible to do with a home cooked diet. Dogs are omnivores and require an appropriate balance of nutrients as a part of a healthy diet. Most dogs do well with twice daily feedings. Typically, I recommend commercially prepared foods, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, and Purina ProPlan. However, many people prefer preparing their dog's food at home. Balanceit.com is a website out of UC-Davis that has a wide variety of recipes for home cooked diets with appropriate vitamin and mineral supplementation. I am not aware of any appropriately balanced vegan diets for dogs, but a vegetarian diet is certainly possible. Common fruits and vegetables that Pelu could consume include green beans, peas, carrots, beans, and apples. I don't understand your question about "dollops" of fruits and vegetables. Simply follow any home cooked recipe closely and be sure to supplement so that Pelu does not experience any mineral deficiencies.

Carrots, squash, green beans and peas are all good choices, and a lot of dogs actually like them. Broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers are safe but generally not as "dog approved." Never feed onions, garlic, or chives, as these will cause red blood cell damage that will lead to life threatening anemia when ingested in large enough quantities. While these vegetables are okay to add in as a supplement I would make sure that kibble is 90% of the diet to avoid nutritional deficiencies. Recently there has been some concern about boutique, grain free and exotic ingredient diets and a link to dilated cardiomyopathy which could cause heart enlargement, and it seems like kibble from larger companies like Royal Canin are the safest option. Fish oil may be beneficial for dogs with cardiac disease.
