My dog is on a renal diet. Can my healthy dog eat it too?

Pet's info: Dog | Old English Sheepdog | Male | neutered | 2 years and 2 months old | 70 lbs

I have two dogs, ages 2 and 4. The 2 year old needs to be on a renal diet. Is it okay that my 4 year old eats the same diet with healthy kidneys?

Aww, they are a pretty adorable pair! The short answer is, 'yes," that is fine. This will not harm your other dog to be on long term as well. The longer answer is that if he is a working dog, or is a very athletic dog (regularly goes for 3+mile runs, does agility, etc) then a less protein restricted maintenance diet would be better for him.

Can my healthy cat eat the same kidney diet as her sick sister?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! To be safe, I would recommend blood testing the second cat. If she's not in failure, it would give a good baseline for future blood testing. It will not hurt both cats to be on the special diet. My healthy dog ate my other dog's kidney food. Should I worry?

No, it is generally not an issue in cases of a one time ingestion. At worst, the sudden diet change may cause some gastrointestinal upset in your younger dog. This can be managed, if necessary, with a 24 hour fast followed by a bland diet until symptoms resolve.

Hello. You can use the same food for your other dog, but you may need to feed a bit more to her. It is easier to feed everyone the same food, but if both dogs eat their meals separately & nothing is left down, then you can also feed the other dog something else less costly. Can both my dogs eat the same prescription urinary care food?

The urinary care food is a prescription diet to maintain PH at a level to prevent certain stones forming. If you give it to a dog who doesn't need it, it can actually cause the PH to change too much causing another type of stone to develop. Therefore I do not recommend feeding it to your other dog.
