My Greyhound ate a foreign object and has diarrhea. What to do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Greyhound | Female | spayed | 55 lbs

My Greyhound has explosive diarrhea since yesterday with each episode happening about every 3 hours. I'm pretty sure her body is trying to get rid of a foreign object she ate, when I wasn't looking. She pooped out a sock yesterday morning. Is there anything I can give her that will move the object out faster, rather than have her body keep expelling out liquid?

Poor Willow! No, I'm afraid that I would definitely not recommend giving her any kind of laxative or other medication intended to stimulate defecation, as this is likely to make the problem worse. If she's acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours, then feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to see if this helps - often, if the problem is due to a minor upset stomach or something she may have eaten, this plan works very well.

If there is no improvement in the diarrhea in the next 2-3 days, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as these can be signs of a more serious problem.
