Grain-free food causes puppy diarrhea. Why does Ol' Roy firm poop?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 7 days old | 19 lbs

So I’ve found that diamond natural and pure balance wild and free grain free(both for large breed puppies)give my siberian husky puppy raging diarrhea however her eating my 3year old Rottweilers ol’ Roy tbone and chicken flavor firms her poop right up. What gives? It feels backwards to how it should be.

Hello, and thanks for your question. The grain free foods tend to be very rich; diarrhea is actually pretty common. I do not recommend grain free food - there is no science to back up any benefits of going grain free in dogs, and there are actually concerns that it is harmful (if you want further information, look into the connection between grain free and dilated cardiomyopathy heart disease).

I recommend Purina, Hills Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Iam’s Eukanuba puppy food. Ol’ Roy would not be my preference, but I would still recommend it over grain free, especially since Freya clearly tolerates it better!
