French bulldog puppy has soft poop on grain-free. Can I switch food?

Pet's info: Dog | French Bulldog | Female | spayed | 6 months and 17 days old | 20 lbs

I have a French bulldog who came home on a grain free diet. She constantly has soft poo and we have ruled out any medical concerns. I would like to change her food to regular diet (not grain free). Is this okay to make the switch?

I'm glad to hear that Roo is healthy aside from this soft stool. Yes, it's absolutely fine to switch her to a standard grain-containing diet. The FDA has issued warnings about grain-free diets and a concerning link to dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), so switching is a great idea. I prefer brands like Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin, Iams, or Eukanuba, as these companies employ veterinary nutritionists and conduct proper testing on their diets. Since Roo is only 6 months old, be sure to look for a puppy food, as these are formulated for growth. When she's about one year old, you can switch her to an adult food. One of the most important things to remember is that anytime you switch her diet - even just opening a new bag of food - it's best to mix the old and new foods together gradually over 5-7 days. Sudden diet changes can trigger some vomiting and/or diarrhea, which is the last thing anyone needs! I hope that everything goes well!

Also, this will not help soften the stool. If you are worried about Deebo’s stool, you can add more water to his diet either to his food or with canned food. Or you can add 1-2 tbsp of canned (plain) pumpkin to his diet 1-2 times daily. Good luck and kisses to Deebo!

Should I switch dog food after puppy had soft stools on Blue Buffalo?

I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only. Why is my French bulldog pooping so much after switching dog food?

This is likely due to a higher fiber content in the newer food. Defecating this much will not cause any problems but if you would like to reduce the frequency at which Daphne is going to the bathroom, I would recommend switching to a different food such as Science Diet and see if this helps. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beuno. Stool problems in young dogs are most commonly caused by parasites or diet. I recommend having his veterinarian perform in depth stool testing to assess for parasites or other causes of gastrointestinal infections. If there is nothing found, then you may need to consider a diet change. I would recommend a prescription gastrointestinal diet that is formulated for use in puppies such as Purina Veterinary Diet EN. This is a highly digestible diet and many times can resolve the symptoms. You need to be careful with grain free diets as some have been associated with heart disease. They also tend to be quite high in carbohydrates which can lead to weight gain over time. I hope this information helps!

My Frenchie puppy has mushy poop. How can I firm up his stool?

Hello, I would recommend picking up some probiotics from your vet to help repopulate his gut with good bacteria. Common ones are called Fortiflora and Proviable, but there are other fine brands as well. Also ensure that Chicharon has been dewormed recently. Most areas recommend giving puppies general deworrmer every two weeks during the first four months of life. You can also pick up some prescription canned gastrointestinal food from your vet made to be easy on the belly. Plain rice and pumpkin are also fine choices though. A bit of loose stool is common for dogs in a stressful situation, such as moving to a new home, so this may be a short lived situation. I hope this helps. Is Purina Pro Plan right for my French Bulldog's sensitive stomach?

Hello again. It is always hard to say for sure if Lou will tolerate this food as each dog's digestive tract is unique and can be sensitive to many different diets. However, Purina pro plan is a great diet and a good choice for Lou as he recovers. The Purina company has veterinarians on their team to ensure that all of their foods are nutritionally complete and balanced. I would recommend slowly transitioning him from the royal canin to the purina diet over 3-5 days. Hope this helps, glad to hear Lou is feeling better!
