Good grain puppy food for my 4-month-old? Switching from grain-free.

Most pets do not have grain allergies. More commonly it's the protein source that causes allergies. For most dogs, grain free is not recommended. For general food, I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and this results in great stool quality, minimal quantity and low odor. I also like Nutro and Purina Pro Plan. If you want to rule out a food allergy, the fastest way is a proper food trial using a hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

Grains are very rarely the cause of any skin issues so switching Kyya to a normal, grain containing diet is recommended. Keep in mind that the link is not understood but as long as the pet is not showing signs of heart disease, changing the diet will help avoid any heart pathology. The brand I like best is Royal Canin. There are a few that stand out in my opinion in terms of quality and palatability. I really like the Science Diet, Royal Canin and Purina Pro Plan products. A diet that I have found to be of very good quality, affordable and dogs love is the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends. You can find that at your local pet store or online. Otherwise any of the diets of the previously mentioned brands would also be good choices for Harley. Good luck!

I usually recommend feeding a high quality diet. Purina is an excellent diet but if you do not have access to this diet, there are others that you could consider that are also excellent such as Hill's Science Diet, Royal canin and Iams foods. Grain does not necessarily make dogs gain weight so I would be more focused on the quality and balance of the diet per se. Good luck and have a great day!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Korbyn. These are all great questions! There are few dogs that are actually allergic to grains. The ones that are tend to be Irish Setters. Grain free diets have developed mainly as a marketing ploy to add a niche market in the pet food department. Now if your individual dog does better on a grain free diet that is great and fine to feed it to him. However, these diets tend to be higher in carbohydrates and will lead to weight gain. Protein source typically a personal preference of the dog. You can see what he likes and how it agrees with him. You need to determine what your goals are for the new diet. Is your puppy experiencing vomiting and diarrhea on his current food? Is he passing large frequent quantities of stool? Does he have a dry brittle hair coat? These are all signs that his diet is not right for him. When transitioning to a new diet, you want to do it gradually and then see if any of these things improve for him. As far as a brand, I recommend using one that has AAFCO certified. You can find this information on the side of the bag or on the company website. Hi, while there are many opinions on which dog food is best, the general consensus is that any food that lists meat as the first ingredient is a decent food. Corn is just filler and is not harmful to a dog unless he has allergies or a sensitive stomach. Your food should not be a large percentage of corn. Grain free food is very popular as some dogs can be sensitive to grain. There is no easy answer as to what is the best dog food out there, it is what works for your particular dog. The most expensive food is not necessarily needed. The organic and holistic foods are aimed at people thinking that dogs have the same nutritional needs, in my opinion. I would chose a high quality food with meat listed as the first ingredient, a low percentage of filler like corn, and no extra additives like colors or dyes. If you choose a high quality food like those purchased at a pet store and your dog seems to be tolerating it well, stick with that food. If he has diarrhea or skin problems, he may need a different type of meat or grain free. Science diet has been around for a long time and is a very reputable brand for vets and pet owners. But ultimately, it is your choice. You are Prince's caregiver and have to decide what is best for him, which is a mostly meat, low additive food regardless of the brand. Puppy food should be fed until he is 1 year old then feed adult food of the same brand. If you are looking for organic food, Newman's own makes an organic food, as well as Trader Joe's, Spot's choice, Wellness, etc. I would google a list of organic foods and compare their ingredients. Dogs do not need organic food, this is more of a preference of their owners, like if you eat only organic food and want your dog to do the same. Most dogs are very tolerant of most types of foods and as long as introduced to a new brand slowly, should do just fine. I do not recommend grain free. Grain free allergies are actually very rare in dogs, and vets are seeing an increase in dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs who are on a grain free diet. The FDA is investigating that link. There is also no proof grain free diets are beneficial for dogs. I would be feeding Freddy a puppy formulated food. Brands I recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my own dogs Iams, and they love it. I hope this helps!
