Is my Goldendoodle's behavior typical for a Golden Retriever?

Both Golden Retrievers and poodles were originally bred to be hunting dogs and like to chase and hunt. In my opinion, Golden Retrievers tend to be more easily excited. Fortunately both breeds are usually 'easy' to train, so if these behaviors are undesirable you might be able to curb them with some basic obedience training.

This is something called "submissive grinning." Golden Retrievers smile, but other breeds do It too - actually any dog can do it. It's thought to be an evolutionary behavior that's intended to show that the dog isn't a threat to people. It's suspected that we maybe inadvertently encouraged this behavior by getting excited when dogs do it ("Look! He's smiling!") so smart dogs (like Golden Retrievers) interpret this as they have pleased us, so they'll do it again and again. I think you could breed for personality traits that would make a dog more likely to be a good therapy dog but it likely isn't genetic. It sounds like Cooper is just a great dog! Have a great night!

Dogs in general evolved to be scavengers, and Golden Retrievers are an exceptionally food-motivated breed. While this makes them very trainable, as they respond very favorably to food rewards, owners of Golden Retrievers should be diligent about keeping food and garbage secure, to limit the possibilities that their dog will eat excessively, or will eat something dangerous to him. Congratulations on your first dog! I recommend to first have harry examined by the veterinarian and have any vaccines, antiparasitics...etc updated. Bring in his vaccine records if you have them. Then I recommend to start reading about dog behavior and training. Your local library is a wonderful resource for books. Read books about golden doodles, golden retrievers and poodles but keep in mind that all dogs are individuals. Also read about dog training. One trainer I like in particular is Victoria Stilwel. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This looks like a Beautiful Golden Retriever puppy. He would be expected to grow as large as a Golden Retriever so in between 65-75 pounds and his haircoat should be the same as any other Golden Retriever. Best of luck!
