My German Shepherd has a recurring scab on his back. Is it mites?

It is a little hard to tell based on these photos, and a closer look in person might make a difference, but this could definitely be a scar. If it is a scar, I'd hate to see what the original injury looked like! A veterinarian could take a closer look at the tissue, hair follicles, and how it feels, and make a better assessment on whether it appears to be a scar or diseased skin. These scabs could be due to a skin infection or a rash. Keep an eye on them, and if the scabs do not go away or increase in skin and area, then I would have Kai seen by a vet for it. You can try giving him an oatmeal to see if that helps.

Hello. Willow may have a bit of dermatitis going on. I would recommend bathing her in a Benzoyl Peroxide based shampoo which you can find at most pet retailers & online. Follow the directions by making sure you leave the lather on for 10 minutes before rinsing. Repeat twice a week until the skin heals ( which may take several weeks of bathing ). If the skin does not seem to be healing, she may have allergies or require antibiotics, but a medicated shampoo often will clear up these minor issues. It is hard to say exactly what the cause of Ben's skin lesions may be due to without examining Ben first, but some possibilities may include a fungal infection, bacterial infection, mites, a food or environmental allergy, or evidence of an underlying endocrine disorder such as Cushing's disease or a thyroid problem. Your veterinarian can diagnose these potential conditions with a fungal culture, skin scraping, and some blood work. I would recommend Ben visit another veterinarian or perhaps a board certified veterinary dermatologist soon to have the possibilities above ruled out and a definitive diagnosis made so he can get the most appropriate treatment. This presentation is due to a skin infection, possibly caused by bacteria. A veterinary consultation is needed in these cases as antibiotics will be quickly resolving this problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching (if any). Poor doggy. It could be flea infestation, flea allergic dermatitis, mange, fungal disease, alopecia due to metabolic and system disease. Really hard to tell by the picture but definitely need a vet check up. Please post again on the forum if you would like to discuss it further. I hope my answer was helpful.

It's not possible to tell you what is wrong with her skin based on the color only, you need to take her to the vet and have the skin checked and analised for infections and parasites first, after the vet reaches a diagnosis he can give you the correct treatment.
