My German Shepherd puppy had anemia. Will he be healthy long-term?

It looks like your dog has a chronic disease and serious anemia. Without knowing whether your dog was also checked for tick diseases, such as Babesia, Ehrlichia or also for autoimmune anemia, and certain viral diseases, and without a hands-on exam there is no way to tell whether she will be okay. Ehrlichia and Babesia infections can be treated as well as autoimmune anemia. Since your puppy is very young it may have a terrible flea infestation which is causing the anemia. Your veterinarian should be able to advise you properly.

Anemia in puppies can be caused by tick born infections and from intestinal parasites. There is also a small chance that a puppy would be born with a bone marrow problem. The doxycycline has a good chance of a cure, but I would highly encourage you to visit with your veterinarian about a broad spectrum deworming protocol to make sure that is addressed as well. Depending on how anemic he is will determine how long he takes to recover. However, if the medication is working you should see improvement within 2 weeks or so. It is impossible to give you a definite answer to this question. Certainly the poor start in life could have had a detrimental effect to the pups development especially its immune system. However, a lot of puppies that have had a bad start dont look back once they get into a good routine. My advice would be to keep the pup well up to date on vaccines, worming, external parasite control and feed a good quality puppy food such as royal canin/hills. You could have the puppies bloods checked when it is 6 months just to make sure its organs are doing well.

I think feeding the Royal Canin is a very smart move, but I am always a little concerned about adding supplements. It is just so easy to over supplement & cause more problems, especially when you are already using a nutritionally complete food. No one can guarantee that Luffy will develop totally in comparison with other GSDs, but he should be the best he can be. You also need to keep in mind that GSDs can be quite prone to hip & elbow dysplasia, & the wrong supplementation can exacerbate this condition. The anaemia will take time to rectify itself, it can take several months for the gums to go back to their normal color. the most important thing though is that she is responding well to the treatment.

This may be due to an immune mediated condition or an infection of some kind. For this reason, I recommend that they proceed with diagnostics such as infectious disease testing and abdominal ultrasound to look for possible reasons. Therapy would be dependent on findings.
