My German Shepherd ate too much food. Will he get bloat again?

Feed a few smaller meals during the day instead of one large dinner. Restrict his activity for an hour after he eats (no running). If you see his belly area begin to get bigger, and he is trying to vomit, rush him to an emergency vet clinic right away. This is a tru emergency where minutes count.

Hello! This is what we call "food bloat" which happens when dogs manage to eat a massive amount of food! Their stomachs stretch with the huge amount of food, causing the bloated bellies. When people bring these pets to me, we usually recommend putting them on IV fluids until the bloating resolves, and not feeding at all. Their stomachs could potentially rupture, when the kibbles swell, and mix with water. So, at this point, I wouldn't suggest feeding them. Ideally they should be checked by their vet, to see if they are okay recovering at home, or whether they need treatment at the clinic.

No, I wouldn't worry too much. I just suggest you skip the next feeding OR only give a tiny amount of food (like 1/4 cup) and don't let the Bulldog do much exercise. The exercise after eating a lot is what causes the stomach to flip in most cases. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

I'd without food for tonight, and keep a close eye on him. If you see pacing, anxiety, restlessness, trying to vomit but can't, and excessive drooling, take him into an ER vet right away. It may be best to keep the food locked behind a door or in a cabinet with a child lock. I would recommend that he get checked out by a vet, though. Food bloat can be very, very painful, and in some cases it can cause the GI tract to stop moving. Occasionally, these dogs need to be hospitalized for monitoring and IV fluids and medication to support their digestion and get the contents moving through.

I certainly understand being worried about bloat! It can be a common problem in deep chested dogs like a GSD, but it's a good sign that he is acting normal. EPI can cause farting, so that may be the reason behind his gas. I would monitor him closely tonight. If you see unproductive vomiting (trying to vomit but nothing coming out), pacing, anxiety, excessive drooling, weak pulse, labored breathing, or abdominal pain, then definitely take Thor into an ER vet tonight. Otherwise it's fine to wait until the morning. I hope this helps!

Withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he seems very lethargic or vomiting, take him to the vet to get treatment right away as he might develop GDV (gastric dilatation).
