Why is my German Shepherd whimpering from neck pain when eating or moving?

He may have some spinal cord problems, especially with the cervical spinal cord, such as a slipped disk or arthritic changes that press on nerves and are painful. Ob is apparently very much in pain and therefore should be seen by a veterinarian tonight. The vet will do a thorough physical exam, palpate the spine to find where the pain is coming from, and also do a neurological exam and then x-rays. He will then discuss the exam findings with you and possible treatment. Your dog will get pain medicine and other medications as necessary. Dogs with pain often do not eat, and eating also may be painful as he has to chew, open his mouth and move the jaws. This may be more painful than lapping up water.

She could have arthritis in her rear legs, degenerative myelopathy, neck or back problem, etc. She should to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the exact cause. Your vet can do a full orthopedic exam and take x-rays, if needed, to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. She may need an anti-inflammatory and or pain medications to help. So sorry that Babe is not feeling well. There is nothing we can tell you to do at home to help this situation. You need to get her to a vet ASAP for an exam. Are there no emergency vets in your area? You need to have a diagnosis of why she is having problems swallowing before we can give you any information on how to help her. Some options are: 1. myasthenia gravis 2. hypothyroidism 3. megaesophagus 4. autoimmune disorder 5. foreign body Of course there are many other rule-outs too. My suggestion for right now is to NOT offer her any food as if she can't swallow properly she may end up aspirating some food into her trachea and down into her lungs. That can cause pneumonia which would be very serious. Dogs can go days without eating so I don't think that will harm her that much. She does need water though so offer her only small sips of water at a time, again, so she doesn't aspirate. Get her to a vet ASAP. Poor Violet! She is in pain. There could be several causes including an injury to her back, a calcified disc or a pinched nerve. Since she can’t talk and tell you what is wrong, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today who can also give her medication to make her feel better. If she is whimpering when trying to do an activity that should be easy for her, she is in pain. Even though you have examined her, you may not have palpated all of the areas that could be causing her pain or discomfort in the same way that a trained vet would do. I would recommend that you have Wendy checked out by a vet to see what is going on. It could be a sprain but it could also be a fracture or an issue elsewhere in her body.

An immediate check up is required as these signs seems to be compatible with a neurological problem. Intervertebral disc extrusion/protrusion in the cervical area can cause commonly nerve/spinal cord and meninges (around spinal cord) compression. The compression may be dynamic, showing up signs when moving the neck in certain postures. X rays and more specific and advanced imaging procedures may be needed. I would be very concerned about this level of pain and would recommend an exam by a veterinarian. It could be neurological, a disc problem, a strain in the bones or muscles of the neck or possibly an infection somewhere in that area. The vet may recommend x-rays to get a diagnosis.
