Why is my German Shepherd whimpering climbing stairs after exercise?

Keep an eye on Nyx. If she continues to be uncomfortable tomorrow, I would have her examined by her vet. It could be "growing pains" or something like panosteitis, an inflamed nerve, a sprain, etc. Try to limit activity today (only walking outside on a leash, limited jumping or running). Also, look very closely around each paw pad and between her toes for any punctures, dried mud, or objects stuck in the fur.

There are many possible reasons but especially in German shepherds, hip dysplasia would be a serious concern, especially if she is reluctant to jump up or stretch. Most muscle injuries would be expected to be improving over 3-4days and xrays would be advisable if not settling

He may have a soft tissue injury (like a sprain/strain of a muscle) or an orthopedic issue (hairline fracture, or arthritis). The best recommendation is to restrict his activity for the next 48 hours - no running, no jumping, no stairs, and leash-walks only. If he still limps after that 48 hour trial, Dexter may need to be seen by a veterinarian for a lameness exam.

She could have pain somewhere in or on her body or she could have anxiety. It is hard to say for sure without seeing her or examining her actions. I would recommend video taping her doing this and showing it to your veterinarian. The vet can also do a complete physical exam to make sure she is not hurting somewhere on her body. Typically pets will gnaw or limp on a certain leg if they are experiencing pain along the skin or musculoskeleton. Poor Violet! She is in pain. There could be several causes including an injury to her back, a calcified disc or a pinched nerve. Large breed growing dogs can develop a common problem called panosteitis. This is caused by fast growing bones. However, German Shepherds are also known for elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon to make sure that there are no other concerns. Panosteitis can come and go for months. It sounds like Monster is having pretty significant neck pain. It could be a pulled muscle, but more serious possibilities include a bulging disc or even meningitis. I would recommend that you have Monster evaluated by a vet to determine what could be going on. After a physical and neurologic exam, the vet may recommend x-rays or blood work to determine what is going on.
