My German Shepherd's hind legs hurt. Is it from limited movement?

Hello. I am sorry that Zara is hurting. Sometimes German Shepherds can have something called "Hip Dysplasia" and can have severe arthritis and abnormal hips and this can cause pain and trouble walking. I recommend you have her checked by your vet, who will likely perform x-rays to check her hips. Your vet can also help you get set up with joint supplements as well as pain management for Zara. There are many possible reasons but especially in German shepherds, hip dysplasia would be a serious concern, especially if she is reluctant to jump up or stretch. Most muscle injuries would be expected to be improving over 3-4days and xrays would be advisable if not settling

It sounds like Damian may have cauda equina syndrome. It could be arthritis in the hips but I think cauda equina is more likely. This is an extremely common problem in German Shepherds. He may just be overdoing it and therefore his hips hurt. However , since German shepherd dogs are notorious for having hip dysplasia, he may have an early onset problems related to a possible hip dysplasia issue, although that is extremely rare at this young age. I suggest you regulate his playing time in such a way that he does rest sufficiently and monitor his pain. If the pain does not subside or gets worse, then you should have him checked by your veterinarian,

Toby is a senior citizen now. It looks like he’s lost a lot of muscle in the rear legs. I expect he may have hip or back arthritic contributing to his symptoms. I recommend a second opinion with a Rehabilitation veterinarian if there is one near you. In addition I would purchase a Help em Up harness so you can assist him to stand and walk. The longer he’s down and not using his legs the less ability he will have to walk again. I would get him standing for a few minutes several times a day and help him to go outside to potty. Large breed growing dogs can develop a common problem called panosteitis. This is caused by fast growing bones. However, German Shepherds are also known for elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia. I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian soon to make sure that there are no other concerns. Panosteitis can come and go for months. Keep an eye on Nyx. If she continues to be uncomfortable tomorrow, I would have her examined by her vet. It could be "growing pains" or something like panosteitis, an inflamed nerve, a sprain, etc. Try to limit activity today (only walking outside on a leash, limited jumping or running). Also, look very closely around each paw pad and between her toes for any punctures, dried mud, or objects stuck in the fur.
