Cons of stenotic nares/soft palate surgery for French Bulldogs?

French bulldogs are brachycephalic, meaning that their muzzle is shorter than a normal dog. This does pose some anesthetic risk but for the most part, these pets do fine under anesthesia with appropriate precautions. I do agree with your veterinarian that having her spayed is a good idea. I recommend to look for veterinarian who has experience and is comfortable with sedating brachycephalic dogs. If you notice that she is a noisy breather, you may talk to the veterinarian in advance about repairing any stenotic nares or elongated soft palate during the procedure. These conditions are very common in French bulldogs. If she’s already going to be sedated for a spay, then that would be a good time to repair these other abnormalities if the doctor thinks it’s necessary. The nostrils will not close again once corrected if done right and his breathing should improve through his nose. I would discuss the surgery with your veterinarian. I would have the surgery done if this is the recommendation so that the flap does not obstruct the airway. The anesthesia is typically not the problem it is the recovery period when the tube is removed from the airway that the breathing problems can occur. Once the tube is in place for Rusty to attach the anesthesia to, it will probably be the best that he has ever been able to breathe if he has been dealing with an elongated soft palate. Typically with these cases, I will leave the airway tube in place until the patient is wide awake and can hold the head up. Once the patient is awake and able to swallow, I then pull the tube. It's only recommended if your dog is suffering from respiratory problems, otherwise i would not recommend having it done. the price can vary greatly as this syndrome in french bulldog can have multiple causes and surgeries in 4 different areas in the upper respiratory system may be needed, i don't think anyone would be able to give you an estimate before having at least a couple xrays done on him first.

This difficulty breathing could be related to his bronchitis, but the conformation of his nostrils and soft palate could be contributing to it as well. Because of his flat face, Jax will have an undersized throat and breathing passages, and when there is inflammation in the airways, it will be even harder for him to breathe. If he's congested, he may need bronchodilator, and you'd have to speak to your vet for a prescription for that. At home, you you can also try using a humidifier or bringing him into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections. When he's better from the bronchitis, it would be worth a discussion with your vet about his facial conformation. If he has stenotic nares, an elongated soft palate, and everted laryngeal saccules, having surgery done to correct this things will help with his breathing in the future.

This does look like the incision has opened a little. It will heal fine without further treatment. It is important to keep the cone on until the incisions are fully healed, usually 10-14 days. A staffy is a brachycephalic breed, which means the snout is short, but the rest of the head did not get smaller. So the structures in his mouth stayed the same as if the head was longer. This results in an elongated soft palate, which covers the airway and cuts off the air reaching the lungs. This can be repaired with surgery, ie, the soft palate is cut to a smaller size. It is possible that from the inhalation anesthesia, there is a slight irritation of the soft palate, which should go away soon.
