Will stenotic nares surgery on my growing dog need to be redone?

I would agree with the other veterinarian that this may improve quality of life now or in the future. It looks like he is developed some crusting from discharge at the surgical site. I Don’t see signs of infection in the picture, but I would still recommend a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as an examination can detect many things that a picture can’t. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If Rusty has an elongated soft palate, the surgery will definitely help him breathe easier. I would have the surgery done if this is the recommendation so that the flap does not obstruct the airway. The anesthesia is typically not the problem it is the recovery period when the tube is removed from the airway that the breathing problems can occur. Once the tube is in place for Rusty to attach the anesthesia to, it will probably be the best that he has ever been able to breathe if he has been dealing with an elongated soft palate. Typically with these cases, I will leave the airway tube in place until the patient is wide awake and can hold the head up. Once the patient is awake and able to swallow, I then pull the tube. Surgeries to remove masses from the back of the nose can be simple, or can be very complicated, and you often don't know what type it will be until you get into surgery. Often the chewing/eating is OK, however there might be pain present that prevents Spike from wanting to open his mouth. Healing time is variable, and will depend on the location of the mass, how big it is, and if there are any complications with healing such as infection. Likely there will be more swelling and discharge right after surgery while things are healing. I would recommend discussing these questions with the vet performing the surgery, as they will have better answers for you. Best of luck with Spike.

This does look like the incision has opened a little. It will heal fine without further treatment. It is important to keep the cone on until the incisions are fully healed, usually 10-14 days. If this opens further or the discharge becomes yellow or has a foul odor then please bring him in right away for a recheck. A staffy is a brachycephalic breed, which means the snout is short, but the rest of the head did not get smaller. So the structures in his mouth stayed the same as if the head was longer. This results in an elongated soft palate, which covers the airway and cuts off the air reaching the lungs. This can be repaired with surgery, ie, the soft palate is cut to a smaller size. It is possible that from the inhalation anesthesia, there is a slight irritation of the soft palate, which should go away soon. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Is gunner better with just one side being done? If he is then leave him be and see how he does. I think that you did the best thing for him that you could. Your Vet wouldn't have done the procedure if they didn't think it was the right thing to do. Even if his breathing is noisy as long as he isn't over heating you probably did improve his quality of life. Just be careful on hot humid days, he shouldn't be outside long. If he starts getting noisy and distressed looking hose him down with cool water, bring him indoors and put a box fan on him. You can also ask your vet for sedatives to keep him calm during events that make him anxious so he won't go in to respiratory distress. I hope this helps and I wish you and Gunner the very best!
