I found a sick baby fawn whose mother is dead. What should I do?

Pet's info: Other | Unknown - Other | Female | unspayed | 8 days old | 65 lbs

My daughter was playing in the backyard earlier this morning, we kept hearing moaning coming from under the porch. Jasper our 4 year old dog kept sniffing and the porch, so I went down and looked under to find a baby female fawn. My boyfriend brought it out and into the house to give it a checkup since he's a doctor. And not to long ago I went out to get the mail when I saw a dead female deer. Jason said it was most likely the mother. We don't know what to do with her. We think it's very sick?

Search department of wildlife and fisheries for your area to find a certified wildlife rehabilitator. It is illegal in many states to rehab deer without special certification. This site may also help. https://www.nwrawildlife.org/

A vet ER in your area may be able to help as well. Call to see if they know wildlife contacts or treat wildlife. Good luck.

I am sorry to hear about your situation. It sounds like she defintely needs medical attention. I would see if your parents can drive her to a rehab center or some rehab volunteers will pick animals up so perhaps you can find someone to do this. You can look at https://www.nwrawildlife.org/page/Find_A_Rehabilitator and https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/how-find-wildlife-rehabilitator to try to find a rehabilitator near you. Until then I would keep the bird in a quiet dark place and handle it as little as possible.

The best thing to do is to find a certified wildlife rehabilitator. Don't try to feed it until you do. Feeding the wrong foods accounts for more problems than going without a short time. I found an unharmed baby bird. What should I do with the fledgling?

Contact the local veterinary clinic. Ask if the have contact information for a local wildlife rehabilitator. If you can get the bird to a rehabber, it will have an excellent chance at eventual release. House sparrows eat seeds and grains. In the meantime, you can offer a seed mix including millet and sunflower seed. Some moistened dry dog food can also be offered.
