Can I foster a dog at Grandma's with my dogs? What about vaccinations?

From the core vaccines, rabies would be the main virus that could be transmitted from a kitten to a dog. If your dog isn’t up to date on rabies you should make sure he gets vaccinated not just due to potential exposure but also because it’s a very important human public health concern. I would guess that most kittens going into a foster situation would be too young for a rabies vaccine. You may want to have Onyx on a flea and tick preventative since young kittens can have fleas, and even if they have been dewormed intestinal parasites could still be a concern if he could access the litter box. Yes this can happen, especially with diseases like parvo. Make sure your dogs are fully vaccinated, and keep a separate set of clothes and shoes to use at the sanctuary, and change before coming into the home.

You can but it would be best to have a vet administer the vaccinations so they can talk to you about what else she may need. She will also needs boosters. So, technically, yes you can give that vaccination yourself if you feel comfortable doing it. Two more boosters 3-4 week apart would be needed afterwards. Mabel will be due for a rabies vaccination by 16 weeks of age and that has to be administered by a vet (this is law) so you are best off taking her and getting them all done together. Thank you for submitting your question. It should be fine to visit. I would change your clothes as soon as you come home and could even shower before interacting with your own dogs. Being adult dogs and fully vaccinated their risk would be minimal. I certainly would not take your dogs to your dogs to your friend's house though. I hope this information helps!

The breeder is correct that Edith should avoid contact with other dogs if you do not know their vaccination status, but she can have contact with dogs who are fully vaccinated. Parvovirus can be carried a person's shoes and clothes, which is why the breeder implied avoiding contact with people who have dogs. That being said, as long as the dogs at the home where your father is staying are fully vaccinated, there is no problem with him coming to see you :-)

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your foster puppies. That is a tricky situation with the foster group. I do believe that the puppies require veterinary care. Fecal testing should be performed as puppies many times have multiple parasites. This allows the doctor to pick the best medication or medications to treat them. Some parasites, including roundworms can be transmitted to people. Transmission to humans is rare, but having infected puppies in your home could place you at risk. Tapeworms are most commonly spread to dogs through the ingestion of rodents or if the puppies have fleas. Flea control may be discussed. I recommend telling the rescue group about your decision to seek veterinary care and see if there is a veterinarian that they prefer that you use. Ultimately, the puppies need to be seen.
