Can my vaccinated dogs catch distemper after visiting a sick home?

Vaccinated animals are at a very low risk of acquiring distemper virus and passing it on to other dogs. This is because the virus cannot live without fresh secretions; it is inactivated in minutes outside the dog's body. The infected dog typically infects other dogs via coughing infected respiratory secretions though the virus is shed in most other body secretions, including urine. A dog with distemper, even if recovered from the virus can shed the infection for up to 2-3 months so I would restrict any future contact and monitor for any abnormal clinical signs, including coughing or nasal discharge.

As long as your dog is vaccinated it’s ok to take him out for a walk. Don’t go to the neighbors house and don’t have your dog touch other dogs or wild animals. As long as Bruno is fully vaccinated, he should not be in any danger of getting distemper - even if he may have had some brief contact with an infected puppy. The vaccine for this disease is extremely effective, so I wouldn't worry :)

The breeder is correct that Edith should avoid contact with other dogs if you do not know their vaccination status, but she can have contact with dogs who are fully vaccinated. Parvovirus can be carried a person's shoes and clothes, which is why the breeder implied avoiding contact with people who have dogs. That being said, as long as the dogs at the home where your father is staying are fully vaccinated, there is no problem with him coming to see you :-)

Yes, you are ready. Since he will be vaccinated first there is less risk and I recommend getting his full vaccination series before he gets on the couch if you’re worried. If she has been fully vaccinated then the likelihood of her getting distemper is low. If you have any concerns, however, have her examined by your veterinarian. She may just have a viral respiratory infection. Your vet can do a physical examination, run labwork, and prescribe medications, if needed to treat.
