What should I feed my 5 lb Chihuahua puppy and what treats are safe?

I recommend a small breed diet and to stick with one of the higher quality brands. I like Royal Canin because the diets have high quality, easy to digest protein and contain an excellent fiber blend. Most pets on this diet will have great stool quality and minimal amounts of stool because there's not a lot of filler. They actually carry a line for Chihuahuas. I also like Purina Pro Plan. Coco should eat twice a day and should eat puppy food until he is 1 year old. I hope this helps.

In general, grain free food is not recommended due to a potential link with heart disease. I recommend to feed a brand like Royal Canin Chihuahua Puppy (it's ok that he is a mixed breed) or their regular small breed puppy formula. Purina ProPlan also carries small breed puppy diets. Personally, I really like Royal Canin's line of puppy foods - they even have a breed-specific diet for Chihuahuas :) Other good options would include Purina Pro Plan and Hills Science Diet. Whatever brand you choose, make sure to feed Peaches the puppy version the entire time that she's nursing, since she will need the extra calories to make milk for the puppies.

I would recommend a food intended for small breed dogs. The three brands I prefer when choosing a food are Hill’s, Royal Canin, and Purina. I think any of these would be a good choice. Additionally, if you are unsure of the age and history of your dog I would recommend taking her in to be examined by your veterinarian. I would recommend Royal Canin chihuahua brand foor or small breed puppy Hill's Sceince Diet, Evo or Eukanuba. A hard puppy food would be good for Gracie, so I would still feed her the hard food, but feed her in a separate room from the cat. She should be fed three times a day, morning, noon, and evening. Take the daily recommended amount on the bag and divide into three equal portions. Once she is six months old, she should be fed twice a day (morning and evening). Canned food isn't as good for her teeth, and since it has a higher moisture content, it will take more to get her needed daily calories and will cost you more in food. You can add in a little wet food if you'd like, around two tablespoons.
