My sick puppy won't drink water or eat. What can I feed her?

Hello. Better than the Cerelac, you want to use a syringable product like Hill's a/d or Purina Critical Care. If your vet does not carry these, then you can purchase pureed meat baby foods as long as there is no onion or garlic. If you cannot get this, then take any canned dog or puppy food & puree it at home in a blender adding just enough water that you can push the food through a syringe without the food blocking things up. Until your puppy can eat on its own, you can give 1 cc (ml ) every hour. This is just a tiny amount of food that hopefully Goofy will not throw up. You should also syringe a couple of ccs (mls) of water every hour, too. If any of these small amounts still cause the puppy to vomit, he will probably need to be hospitalized for intravenous fluids & continuing medications to control the nausea & vomiting. But if he will hold down these tiny amounts for most of the day, you may be able to nurse him through this. Good luck & thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Just regular canned puppy food would be fine. She may not like what you are feeding. Just getting some calories in her is important. If she is drinking on her own or eating canned food well, then you can stop with the Pedialyte - some dogs really don't like the taste. If she won't eat the canned puppy food (which would be best) you can try bland human foods like: *plain white rice *scrambled eggs * boiled chicken breast * plain pasta No butter, oil or spices on the food.

Your puppy is so cute! Try adding some gently warmed low sodium chicken broth to her food to tempt her to eat. You can also offer her some boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts. If she still isn't eating her food in the morning and/or refuses to eat the things I suggested, I would have her seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

She is going to drink less on that bland diet because those foods hold a lot of moisture. She is getting liquid and water through the food so her intake is less. You can add chicken broth or extra water to the food to encourage her to get more if she is eating well.

Please make an appointment to have Star seen by a veterinarian to help determine the cause of her symptoms. In the mean time, you can try boiling boneless skinless chicken in water, shredding the chicken, and feeding Star small amounts of the resulting chicken broth and cooked chicken with some boiled white rice once it has cooled. You can also try offering her cooked extra lean ground beef and boiled potatoes. These bland foods may help settle Star's stomach. I don't recommend the cerelac, as sometimes the flavourings added can upset a dog's stomach. Good luck, and I hope she feels better soon!

I'm so sorry to hear that Roxanne is feeling so poorly. No, do not stop her from drinking water, but instead of leaving full bowls of water out, try offering her just a few tablespoons of water every hour. If she starts being able to keep this down, you can gradually increase the amount that you're offering. The fact that she's still so thirsty may indicate that she's still quite dehydrated, despite the fluids under the skin. If you're unable to hospitalize her for IV fluids, you may want to ask your vet if they think she should be receiving a larger volume of the subcutaneous fluids under the skin. You can try baby food, low fat yogurt, canned food, or even boiled chicken and rice. You can try pedialyte or Gatorade as a water supplement to help. If she is still uninterested or you notice vomiting or diarrhea then she should be checked for an infection or obstruction
