Is Eukanuba puppy food good for my 1-year-old Lab with dandruff?

I personally recommend Eukanuba. I do not like Blue Buffalo at all, I've seen a number of dogs have health issues on it such as gastroenteritis, plus there is no quality control over their food. They do not own their own factories and send their recipes to other factories to make it. Finally, they do not have a veterinary nutritionist on staff to make sure the food is nutritionally balanced like Eukanuba has. I definitely would buy her Eukanuba. Poor Adah! I'm sorry that she's been itchy. If I'm understanding your question correctly, it sounds like you are concerned that some of the itching may be due to a food allergy. You're right that food allergies are a somewhat common cause of itching and skin issues in young dogs like Adah, so this is very possible. The best way to determine if this is the problem is to do a food trial with a prescription hypoallergenic diet such as Hills z/d or Purina HA - many of these diets are approved for use in growing puppies, so your vet can help advise you on which one would be the best choice for Adah. Switching to another over-the-counter diet may or may not help, since it depends on what ingredient(s) she's allergic to - this is why it's much more effective to do a prescription diet trial, since these foods are specially formulated to avoid causing any allergic response. If she responds well to the diet trial, you can choose to either keep her on the prescription diet long-term, or slowly begin introducing other foods to see what she can tolerate, with the goal of eventually getting her back on an over-the-counter diet.

I would give him fish oil in the diet to improve the coat. I recommend an aloe and oatmeal moisturizing shampoo, and make sure you are using a flea control product as having fleas causing excessive itching will irritate the skin. Also as he’s a puppy please make sure he’s been treated for internal parasites which can cause a poor hair coat. To control the itching you can use Benadryl. Poor Daisy! Dandruff is caused by dry skin, and you can give her vitamin E or fish oil supplements which can help with dry skin. The dosage for fish oil is 1,000 mg fish oil containing 300 mg of EPA/DHA combined for every 30 pounds of body weight.

In general, using a high quality brand is the best way to assure that Bear Bear's coat is healthy. Brands that I typically recommend include Science Diet, Purina ProPlan and Royal Canin because these companies conduct extensive clinical studies and analyses regarding their foods and source ingredients appropriately. Continue feeding Bear Bear puppy food until he is 1 year old, then gradually transition to an adult dog food. Anytime you make a diet change, be sure to do so by gradually mixing old and new foods together over 5-7 days. Bathing every 2-4 weeks in a gentle oatmeal based dog shampoo can also be beneficial. If he seems to have dry skin, an omega 3 fatty acid supplement (such as Welactin) can be beneficial. Also, make sure that he is receiving a high quality flea and tick preventative (such as Nexgard, Bravecto or Advantix) regularly.

It would be better is she was switched to an adult dog food. Small breed dog foods are typically a small pellet. Eukanuba has a small breed adult dog food so you could try that and see if she is able to eat that food. You should gradually switch to the adult food as an abrupt change may cause some gastrointestinal issues.
