My dog yelps when I touch his ear base. Should I see a vet?

I am sorry to hear about Baxter. It is quite possible that he could have an infection or pain deeper inside his ear then you can see with the naked eye. A dog's ear canal is deep and turns sideways. They can also have middle ear infections that can cause pain and a head tilt. He needs to have an exam by a vet and they can look into his ear with an otoscope to try to find the source of pain!

Draco is very cute! If you see pus, he's whining when he scratches his ear, he has a head tilt, and shakes his head, I would be very surprised if he didn't have an ear infection! It sounds like he has all the symptoms. Take him into a vet today to get this examined and treated. With the symptoms you are describing it, sounds as though he may have something stuck in his ear canals. It could be that Jax is suffering from an ear infection. This would be painful to him, and it would cause him to touch his ear. In dogs, ear infections can be caused by yeast, bacteria, or ear mites, and the cause of the infection needs to be diagnosed so it can be treated correctly. Hello. I am glad that you had your veterinarian take a good look in Moka's ears & no infection or foreign material was seen. However, she might have a very mild or allergic condition in her ears. Your veterinarian could swab the ears & submit the sample for a culture & sensitivity, or your veterinarian can prescribe a short course of a steroid to see if this calms the signs. I'm so sorry that Shadow's ear is hurting. From the appearance of the picture, I presume that the discharge is coming from the ear canal. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to determine what is causing an ear infection except for performing an ear cytology. An ear cytology is when your vet takes a sample of the discharge from the ear and looks at it under a microscope. They can then determine if the infection is caused by yeast or bacteria or both and determine the best way to treat it. I wish I had another answer for you, but I think it's time to take Shadow to the vet for an examination and ear cytology. I would not recommend cleaning the ear before taking him in, so your vet can get an accurate sample of the ear discharge. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
