My dog's ears hurt when touched, but the vet found nothing. What now?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | 10 years and 5 months old | 59 lbs

Dear Vet, I think my dog has a problem with her ears everytime I rub it she moans or even if I clean it with soft cotton she gets upset and start itching it with legs. However I took her for a check up and vet saw it with telescope for ears and he said everything is clean. But I am not convinced is it normal? Should I ask for other check up please what do you suggest to do? I am very concerned because I want her to be comfortable am afraid she might be in pain and no one is able to know.thankyou

Hello. I am glad that you had your veterinarian take a good look in Moka's ears & no infection or foreign material was seen. However, she might have a very mild or allergic condition in her ears. Your veterinarian could swab the ears & submit the sample for a culture & sensitivity, or your veterinarian can prescribe a short course of a steroid to see if this calms the signs. If so, then a plan can be discussed as to the best treatment to keep Moka healthy & pain free. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
