Why did my dog suddenly yelp when getting up, but isn't limping?

It might be that her back or neck is sore. Try to prevent her from jumping, running, or playing tug of war/roughhousing for a few days. If it’s not getting better in the next 2-3 days, take him in to the vet. If he’s getting worse, or develops other symptoms, don’t wait to take him in. It sounds like your girl is in pain, and given that she is getting up and moving around to a different after waking up yelping, I would be concerned that she is having pain in her spine and/or neck. This would also affect her walking and cause her to be lethargic. Because this has been happening for a couple of days now, I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning. The vet can do a lameness exam and x-rays to diagnose if there is a problem with her neck and/or spine, and can treat her for it. In the meantime, please do not give her any pain medications, many human ones are toxic for humans and can fatal if given.

Hello. Tis could be anything from simple muscle overuse, to a tendon sprain to an actual ligament tear. Ligament tears are unfortunately quite common, especially the anterior cruciate ligament ( ACL ). This may also be the first indication that Nalah has hip dysplasia. So, if she still seems very uncomfortable tomorrow, you might want to schedule a visit with your veterinarian who will be able to localize the pain, possibly with x-rays, but certainly recommend medications or supplements to make her much more comfortable. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. They can then prescribe the correct and safest medications for her condition. I hope this helps and I wish Lazy a speedy recovery!

Poor Lincoln! He could be suffering from a problem with his hips or his cranial cruciate ligaments in his knees. These problems are common in medium to large breed dogs. He does sound painful if he's whimpering when trying to stand up. I would have Lincoln seen by a vet in the morning for a physical exam, lameness exam, and x-rays. With these tests, the vet can diagnose what is causing his pain and can discuss treatment options with you. That may include surgery, especially if he has ruptured his cruciate ligaments. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet prescribe pain medications as needed for him tomorrow. Rest him tonight, don't allow him to just on anything. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, bringing him right back in when he's done.

Poor Lily! If she yelps when she is touched in these areas, this is likely a sign that something is painful - even if she doesn't react when you examine her afterwards. She may have a pinched nerve, a herniated or "slipped" disc, or arthritis pain that could be causing her to do this. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and can also prescribe pain medication for her to help make her more comfortable.

It sounds as she suffered a trauma, either to her back or her hips, you will need to take her to the vet as soon as you can in order to get it checked, if it is nothing too serious she will need some rest and pain killers for a few days.
