My dog is yelping and inactive after his rabies shot. What's wrong?

Oh no. Poor guy. It looks like he is having a superficial pyoderma ("hot spot") reaction to his skin following the injection, and maybe even a bit of cellulitis. You will need to unfortunately take Lucky back to the vet to get this treated with oral antibiotics, and also oral pet friendly anti-inflammatory medication. The topicals aren't going to be enough to help this resolve. You can clean the area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to keep it clean. You should definitely also keep the e-collar on him until this has resolved or at least until it is no longer bothering him. I am sorry your fur baby had such a bad reaction and hope that this can be avoided in the future. Best wishes and take care!

Poor Brandi! You can try putting a cold compress on the spot where she received her vaccine to see if that helps. Leave it on for five minutes at a time a couple of times during the day. If you are concerned she is very painful, I would take her back into the vet for some pain medications. Unfortunately many human pain medications are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given, and it's illegal for me to prescribe any drugs for her without seeing her in person. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chase. The rabies vaccine is typically given in the right rear leg and leptospirosis in the left rear leg. This can result in muscle soreness in some pets. This could be making him uncomfortable and not wanting to use his rear legs normally. However, labrador puppies are pretty tough. So it is unusual for him to still be so painful. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian again or you seek a second opinion. In the meantime, do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Sometimes vaccines can cause dogs to feel a bit groggy, a bit like a person getting their inoculations. However it doesn't tend to be that pronounced. Dogs are very sensitive to new environments and stress so so wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is down to the changes occurring. Whilst he is eating and drinking normally I wouldn't worry too much. However if he deteriorates or dies not return to his usual self in a few days it would be best to get him examined.

Not entirely normal but sometimes pain at the injection site can occur. Is he limping on the leg the vaccine was given in? If not, then no. If yes, then maybe. Do you feel anything at the site of injection? Best plan is to call your vet so they can make a note in his record that this occurred and discuss with you if pain medication is needed. If the limp is in a different leg then something else is likely causing the limp which require an exam with your vet. Chief may be having a vaccine reaction or may just be having pain from the vaccine. I recommend to call your veterinarian and let them know what is happening. They may ask to see him again or they may have you give him an antihistamine. I hope he feels better quickly and please feel free to post any additional questions.

You can see some pain after getting vaccines, this is normal. Pali should be back to himself in a day or two. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. You can put a cold compress on the area where he got the vaccine to see if that helps.
