Why does my dog yelp when getting up or when I touch her leg?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lazy! She does sound very painful! She likely has hurt her back, hips or tail. The fact she cries out when you touch her there and when trying to get up indicates back end pain. Some dogs with anal gland issues or Lyme disease can show similar symptoms. I would have her seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They will very likely on physical exam be able to tell where she hurts. They can then prescribe the correct and safest medications for her condition. I hope this helps and I wish Lazy a speedy recovery!

Hello, sorry to hear about Naughty. There are multiple potential causes for this pain which could be associated with hip pain or knee pain. Naughty would likely need to have x-rays to rule our hip dysplasia and a torn cruciate ligament. In the interim, you should keep Naughty quiet and rested to prevent further injury. The yelping is likely a sign of pain, which can localized to pretty much any of the joints, including the spine. Princess may have trauma or arthritis which are both painful. Your vet can perform and exam and x-rays to determine exactly which part of the body is affected. Supplements, pain medication (if Princess can tolerate them), and a diet may be warranted to keep Princess pain-free. I hope this helps and that all is well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Karma! She is very cute! The most common reason for a hind leg lameness is an ACL (cruciate ligament) tear. They can tear the ligament in both legs which could be why Karma is having such a hard time getting around. Other causes for more than one leg to be lame are: lyme disease or other tick borne disease or immune joint conditions. Karma is still a young dog and it sounds like her quality of life is affected by her hind leg issues. I would be sure she has been lyme tested, have her rechecked by your Vet or seek an orthopedic specialists opinion to see if both her ACLs are torn and to discuss surgical correction. If surgery is not an option then she should be on an anti-inflammatory and a joint supplement. I hope this helps and I wish you and Karma the best!

It could be her back or hips were painful when she got up, and that's why she squealed, but the pain stopped when she started moving around. I would keep an eye on her for now, and if she continues squealing when she gets up, I would have her checked out by a vet. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Best of luck.

Poor Lily! If she yelps when she is touched in these areas, this is likely a sign that something is painful - even if she doesn't react when you examine her afterwards. She may have a pinched nerve, a herniated or "slipped" disc, or arthritis pain that could be causing her to do this. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam when you are able to - he/she can do x-rays if needed to help determine the problem and can also prescribe pain medication for her to help make her more comfortable.

Wow, that is terrible! Unfortunately hip and joint problems are very common in large breed dogs, and it could be that they are suffering from hip dysplasia and/or joint problems such as a tear of their cranial cruciate ligaments. It may just be a terrible coincidence that they both aggravated this conditions around the same time. I recommend resting them for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take they out to toilet on a lead only, and bring they right back in when they are done. If they still appears painful after this time, then I would take them into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. They may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give them any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.
