Why does my dog have yellow scabs on his chest and armpits?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

My dog has yellow scabs under his armpit and on his chest. Was a rescue dog from the pound so not sure on age. Can send photos if needed.

Regarding the skin issue, it could be an allergy, a fungal or bacterial infection as well as skin parasites, in most cases it is necessary to take a small sample from the affected skin and investigate it under the microscope in order to find out what it is, your vet can do that in house within 10-20 minutes.

The only way to upload photos for us to look at is to request a private consultation - feel free to do this if you like! But in general, I can tell you that yellow scabs on the skin may indicate a bacterial or fungal skin infection, an allergy problem, or even skin mites (mange). All of these problems will require prescription medication to treat. I would recommend having Bruce examined by a vet - he/she can do a simple test called a skin scrape if needed to determine the problem, and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it.

Diffuse yellow scabs can be the result of a skin infection. I would recommend to take him to your veterinarian to have him checked and have an antibiotic treatment prescribed (shampoo or oral). Depending on the type of lesions, they could be due to skin allergy or other type of inflammation/infections.

My dog has flaky yellow scabs and scratches his back. What's wrong?

This presentation is probably due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). My dog has scabs on his chest and legs. What could be the cause?

It is possible that these lesions are caused by an allergic reaction, but it could also be caused by an infection, puppy pyoderma (small pustules that aren't caused by infection), mites, ringworm, among a few others. I would recommend that NaNook get checked out by a vet to determine the cause so that he can get appropriate treatment. The vet may recommend a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra which can help with simple bacterial or yeast infections.

My dog has discolored, scabby chest skin. What can I do before vet?

That looks more like a mass from the photograph. Palpate the area and you may be able to determine if there is a lump under the dry skin. If it is a mass, have your pup seen. If it is more dry skin, this could be due to many reasons including ringworm (which humans can get), or bacterial infection. You can try washing the area once a day with antibacterial soap and rinsing it well. If it does not start to improve within a few days have your pups seen by the veterinarian. What should I do about yellow scabs on my new puppy's belly?

A vet’s visit would be best to determine whether the yellow scab are from dermatitis/pyoderma which is a fairly common skin infection. A Medicated shampoo such as Malaseb (available on PetCo.com, chewy.com, 1800Petmeds) that contains chlorhexidine and ketoconazole that is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-seborrheal (will help remove greasy flakes) used to shampoo the belly 2-3 times a week for 2-3 weeks, leaving the suds on 5-10 min prior to rinsing for optimal efficacy may be helpful. (Towel dry but never use a hair dryer on a puppy to avoid burns.) An in person physical exam would still be advisable as other skin conditions such as ringworm can possibly present as yellow flakes and would likely require more than Malaseb shampoo to treat. My dog has small yellowish scabs on his tummy. What's wrong?

The most common cause of scabs like this with red skin underneath is a bacterial skin infection called pyoderma - this can occur on its own, or due to an underlying skin problem like allergies or mange. If the scabs are confined to a single small area and don't seem to be bothering Luigi, you can try applying a topical antibiotic spray to the area for the next few days to see if the problem resolves. If there is no improvement after 2-3 days, or if the scabs become painful or itchy or seem to be spreading, I would recommend having Luigi examined by a vet since he may need prescription antibiotics or other medication to treat the infection.

Why does my dog have a rash, scabs, and hair loss on his body?

In his armpits and on his chest this is a skin infection. I would recommend taking Thor to the veterinarian to get a course of antibiotics to heal this. I would also recommend getting a skin scraping for the hairloss on his back. This may be a skin mite like demodex. I would make sure Thor is on either Simparica, Nexguard or Bravecto. These are oral flea and tick preventions and are used off label for demodex and skin mites. These are prescription so I would discuss them with your veterinarian.
