What can I do for my dog's yeasty paws before seeing the vet?

It would be hard to say what the cause is without having a sample of the affected area taken. Your vet can do this and have it cultured to determine if it is yeast or bacterial in cause which can provide a more targeted treatment. In the meantime, keeping the paws clean and dry is the best course of action as this can help minimize yeast and bacterial growth, especially between the toes where they thrive on moisture. Placing an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Val can also help keep her from licking which can introduce more moisture and bacteria.

It looks like he also has a bacterial skin infection. You could soak his paws in a warm Epsom salt solution and also bathe him with an anti microbial dog shampoo but he probably needs some prescription medications, too. Schedule an appointment with your vet for treatment.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I think you might have meant to attach a picture, it not that would help! Bacterial and yeast infections are common causes of pododermatitis (infections of the feet). They can even be present together. You can try soaking her feet in Epsom salts or use a medicated shampoo on her feet three times per week and leave the lather on for 10 mins before rinsing. If pododermatitis is related to an environmental allergy, wiping the feet with a washcloth every time your pet comes in from going outdoors can help limit exposure to allergens. I also sometimes recommend soaking the feet in warm water with some Epsom salts. Many times antibiotics or antifungals are necessary so if Buster's feet are very red or painful or if you notice sores you should see your veterinarian.

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing her allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Hi the main similarity is that they can both affect paws. However, hypercheratosis is not a fungal infection in can be genetically inherited and it is common in certain breeds such as Labradors Retrievers and affects the pads. Fungal infection is mostly found inbetween the pads and it is mostly caused by Malassetia, a yeast that is normally present on skin but that can overgrow in certain circumstances. To treat the Yest infection you could use a dog shampoo called Malaseb, or bathe Bruno’s paws in diluted Hibiscrub ( Chlorexidine )which I think you should be able to find in India too. Bathing should be done for 1-2 weeks twice a day in diluted solution of 1:20. Hope this helps !
