My dog has a yeast infection. Are her meds safe for liver/kidneys?

Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Isabelle has this issue. Ketoconazole can be very hard on the liver and is only used in severe yeast infections. I would not give this medication unless a vet has specifically said that this medication is required. In general, a mild infection is treated with 5mg/kg (30mg for a 13lb dog), orally, one a day for 2 weeks, where a severe infection can be treated for 4-6 weeks. Often you will treat 1 week past clinical resolution. However, as mentioned, this medication can be very hard on the organs, especially the liver, and should not be given unless monitored by a veterinarian. I would suggest calling your vet to ask about dose amount and duration, as they may be able to tell you over the phone without another consult if you call and ask. Best of luck with Isabelle!

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! Poor Millie! If Millie has an infection, be it yeast or bacteria, she needs to be on either an antibiotic or an antifungal (for the yeast). If the steroids are not working I would discuss weaning and stopping them and ask to start apoquel or cytopoint for the scratching. If Millie has skin allergies you should get her either on a prescription hydrolyzed diet (royal canin HP, Purina HA or Hill's z/d) or an over the counter novel protein diet (chicken is the most common allergen, not grains) of either venison or fish. If you are looking for a weight loss diet there are prescription diets as well. Millie sounds pretty miserable with her skin and she should see your Vet to discuss the next steps in trying to get this under control. I've attached a link to some shampoos you can try. Bathe 2-3 times per week and leave the lather on for 10 mins before rinsing. Then apply the conditioner. I'm not sure why you keep posting the same photo with different information. If you give a short course of medications there should be no issues with damage to the liver or kidneys. All you can do is give the medication as directed and have the kidney and liver enzymes checked periodically by your vet to make sure there is no damage being done. It is very rare for damage to occur from these medications even though it is possible for it to happen. This photo does not show any infection. The color change to the lips appears to be vitiligo. If there is an infection it is not evident by the photos. Please follow your vet's instructions as they are the one that have examined your dog in person.

I would recommend starting an oral anti-fungal therapy as well as treatment with Apoquel for allergies which is most likely the primary cause of this problem, both medications are prescription only that you can get from your vet.

This is a generic version of a common ear medication called Zymox, which is safe for dogs and cats. However, you can have side effects with any medication, so its best to follow up with your vet if you have any concerns after using this. Snoopy's skin issues could be a result of allergies or even systemic diseases (such as Cushing's disease or hypothyroidism) that can compromise the immune system and weaken the skin barrier to infection. Some yeast infections can be managed with prescription-based shampoos containing climbazole, ketoconazole, or other antifungals. To my knowledge, there are no safe and effective over the counter anti-fungal shampoos for dogs. Your vet should be able to prescribe an appropriate shampoo for Snoopy. I realize that you are unable to medicate Snoopy, but realize that some skin yeast infections do not respond to topical medications or shampoos alone and require oral antifungal medications. Hopefully this won't be an issue for her. I hope that she's on the mend soon!
