My dog has a yeast infection. What diet & treatment for itching?

Hi, thank you for using PetCoach. Skin issues can certainly be frustrating. If Mocha isn't responding to the therapy her vet prescribed, please contact them to discuss next steps. It is impossible to diagnose a skin condition from photos alone. Her vet may recommend doing cytology, fungal culture and/or skin scrapes to determine the cause of her infection. In some cases referral to a veterinary dermatologist may be recommended for difficult cases. Sometimes there is underlying endocrine disease or allergies that may require bloodwork to diagnose. In the meantime, a diet for sensitive skin is always a good idea for dogs with recurrent skin infection. I really like Purina ProPlan Salmon for dogs with skin problems. I would recommend using the below products and if no improvement, I would suggest asking your veterinarian about an oral antifungal drug such as Fluconazole to help treat the yeast infection. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oral antifungals are available through your veterinarians office and truly work best in a situation of such overgrowth. The e collar is key to preventing licking, so great to hear you are taking such good care of her! New advances are being made in the allergy world for our pups as well. Things like Apoquel and cytopoint (an oral and an injection, respectively) are now available for our pets and have made a WORLD of difference for many of my clients. If you have not discussed this with your veterinarian-it's time! Why're great. For the sore areas-until you can get her in to be seen-you can apply triple antibiotic ointment twice daily to deter further bacterial infections, just make sure she cannot lick any of it off. Poor Sophie! Yeast infections on the skin are such a frustrating and usually long term problem. They usually stem from some type of allergy. I would recommend to get her on a hypoallergenic diet like science diet z/d ultra. I would also get her on a safe long term allergy medicine like apoquel or cytopoint. I have some dogs that need both to help control allergies. These are safe to give long term compared to steroids. Also, I would talk to your vet about a medicated shampoo like miconahex shampoo. This has an anti-fungal in it. I would try to bathe her 2-3 times per week. Also, tou can start her on an omega 3 fatty acid like vetriscience 369 (see link below). Finally, if the yeast can’t be controlled with these methods, you may consider talking to your vet about keeping her on terbinafine, an anti-fungal, long term. There is a dose where you can give it daily for a month and then twice a week long term and dermatologists believe it is safe. But I would only resort to that if nothing else is working. You can also always ask for a referral to a dermatologist who will likely talk to you about allergy testing and allergy shots which also can help. I hope this helps.

Franklin needs to see a veterinary dermatologist. If he has a food allergy then a novel protein or hypoallergenic diet may help. However, dogs with atopy (allergies) can be allergic to many things such as dust, grass and fleas. Ideally, he needs to have an intradermal skin test to determine what he is allergic to and then a vaccine can be made to help him.

Hello an thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The skin does not look infected, I suspect the excessive itching and redness is related to an allergy. You should try and bath Diamond in an oatmeal soothing shampoo for dogs (the shampoos are available over-the-counter at pet shops, local vets or online). However, if it does not help and Diamond keeps licking herself, you will have to take her to your local vets to get anti-allergic treatment in form of injections or tablets.

Skin lesions like you are describing can be due to a variety of causes, including allergies, contact irritation, heat, an infection, or another underlying issue. While I do think a diet trial may be helpful, dogs typically are allergic or sensitive to proteins in food, not grains, so a switch in the protein basis of the diet (including all treats!) may be beneficial. I would recommend having it re-evaluated by a veterinarian, and further diagnostics (such as a cytology, which examines the skin under the microscope) done to determine what may be causing it, so a long-term plan can be made.
