My dog's wound has a raised lump and scab. Is this normal healing?

Thank you for providing a picture of Phoebe's lump! It looks like she could have injured herself, and the scab is evidence that it is healing. I would leave it alone for now, but keep an eye on it. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and she will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. I hope this helps!

I can't really see the pink area you are referring to in your picture, but I agree that the laceration appears to be healed. I am wondering if the pink area is simply an area of new scar tissue. Occasionally there will be granulation tissue that inhibits full skin healing, but this is usually red tissue that bleeds. If the wound is not completely healed a surgical procedure may be necessary. She is probably due for vaccines at some point in the near future; you may want to have your veterinarian examine the area the next time she goes in for vaccine boosters.

If this just appears to be a crusted area and is not raised, it is possible this was an insect bite that got irritated or a small scratch/wound. If the lesion is raised (I can't really tell from the appearance) then we sometimes get warty skin growths that can get traumatized and bleed/crust over. I would wash the area with a mild soap or Hibiclens (available at most drug stores) and apply a topical antibiotic like Polysporin or Neosporin a few times day. If she is scratching/rubbing at the area she may need an e-collar for a few days to stop self-trauma. If the lesions isn't improving after several days of this or it starts to get larger/other spots appear then these would be reasons to seek veterinary care.

Thanks for sending in the pictures of Oliver. It is a little difficult for me to make out the pictures, but it appears like he has a small skin growth on his head that has scabbed over. I would gently clean the scab and dried blood away with a warm wash cloth. If there is a flesh colored growth it may be a wart like mass. They are common in many dogs as they age. If he has been scratching at his head, then it could be self trauma secondary to his allergies. If it bothers him or does not resolve, then have your veterinarian evaluate him.

It would be helpful to see a picture of the lesion (you can submit photos by selecting "consult online" below your answer), but without seeing it I'd say that it could be a rupturing cyst, a foreign body (depends on where on the body it is - very common on the feet), or a tumor (mast cell tumors can get inflamed and scab over - histiocytomas do as well). If it's been there a couple of weeks, it's probably time to have it looked at in order to figure out exactly what it is. Bulldogs are prone to mast cell tumors, and they can be quite serious if not removed.

Unfortunately i cannot see the picture of it, which would be ideal to give you a specific answer, but I can guess that is a small herniation of muscle/subcutaneous tissue coming through surgical incision (which i guess is healed now) or the result of a chronic inflammation (possibly due to licking the area). In both cases a check up would be required to confirm clinical suspicons and treat appropriately. I would recommend seeing his veterinarian for a procedure known as a fine needle aspirate. The veterinarian will use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. There is a benign growth called a histiocytoma that is common in young dogs. Unfortunately, there is also an aggressive form of skin cancer known as a mast cell tumor. This second mass has the same outward appearance as the benign growth. For this reason, it must be evaluated microscopically. I hope this information helps!
