My dog's raised, bloody wound won't heal, but he acts normal?

A histiocytoma is a common mass on the limb of a young dog. This is a benign growth. However, the outward appearance is the same as a cancerous growth known as a mast cell tumor. Poor Lucky! I'm glad to hear that his vet will be checking him out tomorrow. From the picture, the skin lesion looks most like a hot spot (aka acute moist dermatitis). If you have clippers on hand, you can try to carefully trip the hair over and around this skin lesion to allow for better air flow. You can also gently clean his skin with an antiseptic solution, such as diluted chlorhexidine or diluted betadine, but be sure to rinse and dry thoroughly. If Lucky is scratching at his neck, it would be best to put an e-collar (cone) on until his appointment. A non-healing wound is often cancer. There are other possibilities: it could be a resistant bacterial infection. a foreign object in the skin (like a small piece of wood, grass or a bone fragment) that is causing it not to heal, it could be an auto-immune disease, etc. He needs to see a vet for an exam and some testing. There is no way we can give you a definitive diagnosis over the internet. The wound needs to be cultured an biopsied.

They tend to resolve on their own in a few months but sometimes if they ulcerate, grow rapidly, become infected or bleed we recommend removing them. Another possibility is a mast cell tumor. Without further testing, there is no way to tell if this growth is due to infection, trauma or allergy, or if it is a tumour. Tumours can be of a malignant (cancerous) type that can spread elsewhere and/ or invade the healthy tissue around them, or a more benign (noncancerous) type that is unlikely to spread. I recommend making an appointment to see your vet to have the growth tested. In many cases this can be done using a fine needle aspirate, where cells are removed from the growth using a needle and examined under a microscope to determine what it is and to guide treatment. In some cases further testing may be needed to determine the necessary course of treatment, but it is important to get new growths tested in a timely manner, as some can be cancerous and quite aggressive in their growth, and growths due to infection, allergy or trauma can lead to complications or be indicators of underlying health problems. In the meantime, it is very important that you keep Trey from licking the area to help prevent infection by making sure he wears the “cone” (also known as an e-collar or Elizabethan collar) at all times when he is not being directly supervised by you, including while sleeping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. Based on that location I would be very worried that this is a mammary tumor. This cannot be diagnosed with a blood test. A biopsy of the tissue must be taken and sent to a laboratory for testing in order to rule out a tumor. I, personally, would do a radical mastectomy removing all that swelling/mass and put a drain in there and stitch it closed. If it was a simple infection it would have cleared up by now with the treatment you have already provided so I think you need to do this as the next step.
