My dog has a wound. Should I take her to the vet immediately?

However, it would still be a good idea to have him evaluated by a veterinarian to look at it more closely in case it is deeper than what it looks like. Also, these can be painful and can get infected so your veterinarian could potentially start antibiotics and pain control medications. If superficial, these wounds tend to respond well to therapy and heal relatively quickly. Good luck and have a good night!

I agree, that sore looks very painful and sore, and I'm concerned it could be infected. This should not be treated at home. I would take her into a vet immediately to get this treated. It is impossible to tell from the picture how this happened, or how deep it is, but what can be determined is that it is a severely infected wound. Possible causes are penetrating traumas (sticks, bites, etc.), some parasites/worms can cause wounds like this, and some tumors can present in abnormal ways, however that is less likely. I strongly recommend that you have Star seen by a vet as soon as possible, as the wound appears deep and is definitely infected. It needs to be cleaned up, explored, and medications provided. You should take Murphy to your local vets for an appointment as this wound should be clipped, cleaned, flushed and potentially stitched up under sedation. It would take a very long time to heal if the wound was treated with antibiotics only. The symptoms of infection usually develops in the first 24hrs and include fever, discharge, swelling and pain around the wound.

I am afraid that this is an open wound and will require further local therapy with debridement, cleaning, stitches, antibiotics and pain control medications. It is difficult to tell from the pictures if this is truly a wound; I cannot see close enough. If you believe that she may have a wound or damage to her skin, I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian to see if she requires surgical repair of the wound and/or pain medication and antibiotics to prevent infection. If she is otherwise acting normally (eating, drinking and passing normal feces and urates) you may be able to monitor the area for any changes or worsening appearance. I hope this is helpful!

I recommend to have Charlie examined by the veterinarian today. The liquid likely indicates an infection which can get worse without treatment. Charlie will likely get an antibiotic and maybe a topical treatment. Charlie also cannot lick or scratch the area because this could make it worse. He may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
