My beagle puppy has worms coming from his nose. What should I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

It sounds like it was a tapeworm. They are flat and segmented. The length depends on the segments that come out--they are offered compared to pieces of rice when individual. These worms are transmitted by the ingestion of a flea which can lead to a dull hair coat and dandruff also. It generally does not affect the appetite and cause that mucous and blood in the stool as noted in your pictures. I would be worried there is an infection of some sort and these worms are a secondary finding. You can find tapeworms medicines at the vets office or any pet store, but if the stool continues I would see a vet for further testing

These are tapeworms and should be ideally treated with an effective prescription product. Fleas should be ideally controlled as well as they cause the infection (the worm lives inside the flea during his life cycle). That does look like a worm, and it appears to be a tapeworm segment. Dogs get tapeworms from fleas, so if Coochie and the puppy both have had fleas, that's how they would have gotten it. They will require praziquantel to treat it, which is a prescription drug from the vet. I recommend Drontal, it's an excellent deworming treatment that has praziquantel in it. Make an appointment for both of them to see the vet to be treated. The vet can confirm they have tapeworms, and can prescribe them Drontal. Coochie needs to be flea treated, and you will need to speak with the vet to estimate how hold the puppy is so a safe flea treatment for her can be determined. Best of luck!

You may see Penelope licking her hind end or scooting it along the floor. You may also see actual segments around her back end or stuck in the fur. Occasionally, a dog will vomit up segments as well. Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment. You will likely need to treat her and the environment for fleas as well since that is typically how abdog becomes infected with tapeworms.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Grant has some issues. The blood in his poop will likely be due to the tapeworms. The dry nose isn't a sign of illness. I would take him into a vet today to have his tapeworms treated. Best of luck.

This appears to be a tapeworm proglottid. You will need to do two things: 1) worm your dog with a wormer containing praziquantel. Normal puppy or dog wormers will not kill this. 2) tapeworms are transmitted by fleas. So you will have to do flea control as well.
