What are clear pink worms with red heads coming from my puppy's butt?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Immediate flea treatment and gastrointestinal parasite treatment is required. Panacur is an excellent product, active against most common gastrointestinal parasites and safe for puppies as well. This appears to be a tapeworm proglottid. You will need to do two things: 1) worm your dog with a wormer containing praziquantel. Normal puppy or dog wormers will not kill this. 2) tapeworms are transmitted by fleas. So you will have to do flea control as well.

It looks like this could be a piece of a roundworm or tapeworm segment. I would recommend taking a stool sample in to be seen by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. A dewormer is likely needed.

What you are describing does sound like a tapeworm segment - these are usually short, flat, and wiggly. You're correct that Droncit would be an effective dewormer for this problem - this is a prescription-only medication in most states, so you will need to get this from your vet.

Tapeworms are typically associated with fleas. There are over the counter deworming medications that can be used for tapeworms but if the fleas are not addressed as well the tapeworms will return. With a puppy that young most topical flea treatments are not appropriate but bathing with Dawn dish soap may help remove the fleas on your puppy currently.

That does look like a worm, and it appears to be a tapeworm segment. Dogs get tapeworms from fleas, so if Coochie and the puppy both have had fleas, that's how they would have gotten it. They will require praziquantel to treat it, which is a prescription drug from the vet. I recommend Drontal, it's an excellent deworming treatment that has praziquantel in it. Make an appointment for both of them to see the vet to be treated. The vet can confirm they have tapeworms, and can prescribe them Drontal. Coochie needs to be flea treated, and you will need to speak with the vet to estimate how hold the puppy is so a safe flea treatment for her can be determined. Best of luck!
