Puppy has spaghetti-like worms. Are they roundworms? Can cats get them?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 5 days old | 63 lbs

What kind of worm is this and why does he have it? His previous owner gave him a deworming shot a little after 6 weeks. He’s now 9 weeks old & getting his 2nd round of shots tomorrow. Very similar shape to a spaghetti noodle. He eats carrots, apples, mangos, banana, peanut butter, and plain Greek yogurt as small treats for training. His main food is Wellness Core large breed puppy dry food. We have 2, 3 year old cats that are updated on all shots. Can they possibly get this worm now??

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! That looks like a roundworm. These are very common parasites in puppies and he will likely get medication for it at tomorrow’s visit. These worms are contagious to other animals (cats) and humans if anyone ingestes the feces. As long as your cats aren’t walking through Kodas poop they will be fine and be sure to wash your hands after you clean up after Koda and you will be fine. Kisses to Koda!
