Puppy has spaghetti-like worms. Are they roundworms? Can cats get them?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Koga has roundworms. The eggs of intestinal parasites are shed in his poop not from his fur. You need to clean up the stools as soon as he goes to prevent contamination of the environment. Your son should be ok as long as he isn’t eating the poop. Just make sure to wash his hands after he plays with the puppy or before he eats. You will need to treat Koga twice (3 weeks apart) and the you should be all set. Good luck and kisses to Koga!

I would recommend getting a broad-spectrum dewormer for both your puppy and kitten. You can call your local vet to determine the best dewormer for your area. To test them officially you can bring that worm to your vet, along with a poop sample from both your puppy and kitten, and the vet will send the sample away to check for eggs of different types of worms. I'm sorry to hear that you're seeing worms in Lucky and Kieron's poop and vomit! "Ringworm" is actually a term for a fungal skin infection, so I'm assuming you mean that you're seeing roundworms - these look like long, thin spaghetti noodles. You can get an over-the-counter broad spectrum dewormer like Strongid or Panacur from most pet stores to get rid of them, if you wish - just follow the instructions on the label for dosing, based on their weight. Or if you prefer, take a fecal sample to your vet's office to be checked. They can tell you for sure if you're seeing roundworms or some other type of parasite, and will prescribe an appropriate dewormer to treat your pups depending on what is found.

The worms in the photo appear to be tapeworms or, less commonly, pinworms. these can cause impactions and diarrhea, especially in kittens. Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. You should also be careful when cleaning out her litter box to make sure you wash your hands well with soap and water, as some of these parasites can infect humans. I hope all is well!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

Cassie should be treated with a deworming medication such as Panacar (fenbendazole) which treats roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. This treatment is generally once daily for 3 days. Then, this same treatment should be repeated again in 3 weeks, and again in 3 months. This is done to ensure that all lifestages of the worms are treated by the medication. If there are any other pets in the household too, they need to be treated/dewormed too! I hope this is helpful!

This looks like it could be a roundworm, they look like strands of spaghetti. This is contagious to other animals in the house, and if he has worms, it's safe to assume the others animals do as well. It also means the Safeguard is working to kill the worms in his system. I would make sure they are all up to date on their deworming treatments. I would give another deworming treatment two weeks after completing the first to ensure all the worms are killed. I hope this helps!
