My dog limps on her back leg after playing. When should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

hi. my dog has been limping on 1 of her back legs for 4 days. i have applied pressure all over and no response and in herself seems fine. just running around on 3 legs holding the other 1 up. she was sprinting around a big field then just began limping. she has done this a few times now on the same leg but i usually ok after 2/3 days so i am worried why this time she is still limping.

Poor pup! She could could have torn her cranial cruciate ligament in her knee or done damage to the meniscus in her knee. It's concerning that she has been limping on three legs for four days now, and it's time to see a vet. Rest her tonight, no running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's one. Have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for a lameness exam and x-rays.
