My dog won't put weight on his hind leg after playing. What's wrong?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years old | 55 lbs

My 55lb dog was laying under my chair when I threw him the ball. He immediately quit using his left hind leg and hasn't really put weight on it since, it's been 3 days and I'm worried.

There is a possibility that your dog tore a cruciate ligament in his knee. I would make him rest, ie only leash walk him to do his business outside, and otherwise not let him run or jump around. If the lameness is not gone tomorrow or significantly better, then I suggest you make an appointment with your vet for an exam. Your dog will need anti-inflammatory medication to reduce inflammation and pain.
