My dog won't drink water when I'm on vacation. Will she be okay?

If he seems to be back to his normal self I would not worry. Dogs can tolerate a day without water if the environment where they live is not too warm. I would not recommend to leave him without water regularly, as it would put a strain on his body but as a one off episode there is not much to worry about. There also are some useful dog water bowls that have a reservoir of water that gradually fills up the water bowl, you could try them out if planning to stay out for long hours.

As long as she isn't a big eater she might get by with that amount of food, though ideally, I would like for her to have someone come in at least once art way through your absence to make sure she's got plenty of food and water until you get home. If there is a family member, friend or neighbor that could look in on her that would be perfect.

This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Hopefully she returns to normal and there is no need for a veterinary visit. Have a great day!

I would not be too worried about Bailey just yet. It's ok that she doesn't want to drink water tonight, especially since she drank plenty during the day. She simply may not be thirsty. I would start getting concerned if she doesn't drink any water tomorrow, and if 12-24 hours pass without her drinking water, I would recommend making an appointment with the vet. I hope this helps!

This is always true for dogs as it is hard to know when exactly they will feel the need of drinking water but it is especially true for puppies as they are a bit harder to predict. She may not have a drive to drink if she received iv fluids during her procedures and you are meeting what she needs through her diet. If she is otherwise happy with normal appetite and energy level and no vomiting or diarrhea you can continue monitoring. If any of these change in addition to not drinking then that would be more concerning as dehydration could ensue. It is unlikely that she would die. However, she would be extremely stressed. Dogs are so bonded to their people, and it is very upsetting to them when they are used to human interaction and then left alone for days on end; Chihuahuas certainly tend to be a breed that is usually VERY bonded to “their people.” The stress may lead to vomiting and diarrhea, lack of appetite, which could potentially lead to life threatening dehydration (though water may be available she may be unable to keep it down, and massive fluid losses through diarrhea often require IV fluids). A highly stressful, unsupervised event may also result in risky behavior such as: *jumping excessively at windows and doors, which could be a strangulation hazard if there are curtain or blind cords around *chewing on electric cords * jumping off of high furniture which could result in a fracture or other injury in a small breed dog. If you can have a friend or family member come in and check on Taco even just once a day, that would be highly preferable.
