My dog's front legs are wide-set and paws turn out. Is it normal?

I am not aware of a specific name for this, but it is very common in dachshunds. Any dogs that have shorter than normal legs (like Dachshund or Basset Hound) can have a twisting appearance to the front limbs as the bones grow and harden. It can be a heritable condition, so dogs that are affected should not be bred. The twisting bones themselves shouldn't cause problems, but since his anatomy is not completely normal, he may be predisposed to developing arthritis as he gets older. Making sure that he stays a lean body weight and continues to get exercise will help a lot.

Hi there. Usually splayed feet indicate that they are not using their limbs fully, Ruby is sore on one leg so she's compensating and using the other one more, therefore putting pressure on that side and causing the toes to splay. Both sides do look splayed, so it may be that she's also sore on the hind limbs and putting more weight on the front. I would start her on a joint supplement, I like Dasuquin advanced because it's FDA regulated to have the right amount of ingredients in it to work. You can also take her in for xrays to identify what's going on and perhaps start some anti-inflammatory meds from your vet.

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is most certainly a congenital problem, essentially a birth defect. Whether there are any treatments depends on how severe the problem is, does it involve all the long bones in the legs, it this mainly a problem with joint & tendon laxity, or are certain structures underdeveloped or missing all together. X-rays are imperative. Depending on what is seen, & how much time & money you wish to spend on this poor little guy would determine a treatment plan. Surgery may be an option, but leg braces & splints may be appropriate, too. In the short term, he will probably do fine, but with time & age, he may be very prone to developing abrasions & pressure sores, & most likely arthritis. If you decide to adopt this sweet guy, go in with the anticipation of higher than normal care costs, & unexpected problems that can arise. A special needs pet needs a very special owner. This is common in some toy and small breeds and is not treatable but in other cases can be nutritional or due to joint problems. I recommend a full physical check up, acupuncture and chiropractic care may help if no obvious cause is identified

She is so cute! This is likely just a normal malformation. I would make sure she is getting good nutrition and this make correct itself. If it doesn't, she will likely have a normal life and not have issues with this. If she is having trouble walking, I would have your vet take a look at her to see what options there are for correcting this. I hope this helps !

Wow, Rowan is such a cute boy! As I'm sure you know Dachshunds have a genetic trait that causes them to have disproportionately short legs. This can lead to problems with the bones, joints and cartilage in the dog. Most notably, dachshunds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (like a buldging disc in their spine) that can cause loss of motor function and can be painful. Bowed legs can also be common in this breed. X-rays would be helpful to assess the hips and knees and to look for any signs of early onset arthritis. The X-rays would also be helpful in determining whether or not surgical intervention is needed. I would also recommend starting Rowan on a joint supplement such as Dasuquin to help keep his joints as healthy as possible. Rowan will likely develop arthritis because of his legs at some point in his life but if you start joint supplementation now and keep him nice and trim, it can help delay the onset of arthritis.
