My dog has white liquid at the end of her urination. What is it?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What you are seeing is likely mucous. It could be a urinary tract infection of puppy vaginitis. They tend to grow out of puppy vaginitis. Sometimes they need antibiotics if they are urinating small amounts frequently. I would set up an appointment with your Vet for an exam. I would try to collect a urine sample for the appointment. First wipe the vulva with a baby wipe or a slightly soapy towel (rinse) before collecting. I hope this helps!

This could be normal vulvar discharge, but sometimes mucus and cloudy urine can also be seen with a urinary tract infection. If you continue to see mucus, or if Bailey is straining to urinate, urinating more frequently or having accidents in the house I'd recommend seeing your vet for a urine check.

It could be either discharge from urinary tract or from the rectum. Vaginal infection / inflammation or bladder infection can result in small amount of mucus in the urine. Stools with small amount of mucus is also not uncommon in dogs with mild gastroenteritis. As long as Tinkerbell is bright, alert, has good appetite and normal energy level, keep an eye on her at home. I can see the material you are referring to. It is a little blurry, so I can't tell if the material is more like a mucus, foam, or grainy. This is definitely abnormal and can be caused by a urinary tract infection, mucus in the urethra, or be vaginal discharge. It is possible she is having some mild vaginal discharge which could be being expressed when she urinates. If she seems to be exhibiting any difficulty urinating (straining, taking longer to urinate than normal, or going more frequently in smaller amounts), I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian, as this could indicate something like a urinary tract infection. Your veterinarian will want to perform a full physical exam and also examine a urine sample for evidence of infection. If she does have a urinary tract infection, these are often uncomplicated and treated successfully with antibiotics, as long as she is otherwise healthy without any underlying systemic disease. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The elevated sodium likely has nothing to do with the discharge. The increased sodium while he was sick was likely due to dehydration. It is normal to have a small amount of discharge from the penis in male dogs. Excessive amounts that cause licking or urinary signs is NOT normal and can indicate a prepuce infection or a urinary tract infection. Use mild soap and water to wash the discharge away and see if you can retract the prepuce to see if there is a lot of discharge on his penis. If you see his penis coated in the the discharge that is too much and he should see your Vet. If you do not see any or very little he is likely fine. Good luck!

I would let your vet know if this is a new or sudden symptom. In some cases, some vaginal discharge can be normal (and may be concentrated if Brandy is wearing a diaper), however since she has a history of UTIs it is best to rule anything out such as continuing bladder or vaginal issues if this symptom is new. Signs of something more serious (such as a new infection) may cause the discharge to turn yellow, cloudy, or green.
