How long do whipworm eggs survive in my yard after a dog leaves?

I don't think changing the garden location is necessary if you clean all the vegetables really well when harvesting them. You can change the location if you want but how would you know all of the places that the cats have soiled? You are absolutely right to be concerned about your family, especially young children. Make sure that your children wash their hands very well after scooping if they clean the litter box or help you in the garden. Wear gloves when gardening also. This also helps prevent the transmission of toxoplasmosis which is a big concern for women who are pregnant. Great question. Good luck. It is possible for tapeworm eggs to survive months after being passed by your pet but they then require an additional 'intermediate' host before reinfecting your pet dog or cat. The most common type is passed through fleas and these can last for over a year before developing fully (other rarer types are passed through raw meat including rodents etc if cats catch mice). It is helpful to get your vet to confirm the type of tapeworm in order to understand the cycle of infection - using an insecticidal household flea spray is essential to break the flea/tapeworm life cycle

Yes, it is true that the pet stops shedding worms after about 7-10 days of getting rid of the worms themself, which can take up to 2 treatments (done 2 weeks apart). So you cannot expect a pet to immediately be non-infective, but you can safely say that after 3 weeks of the first treatment, followed by a second treatment done 2 weeks later, that the pet is no longer shedding eggs. Also keep in mind that heartworm prevention (i.e. Heargard, Trifexis, etc) has natural dewormer in it, so your pet can get monthly intestinal worm treatment as well, further reducing any inadvertent spread of worm eggs.

This is correct that Heartgard doesn't cover whipworms. I would talk to your vet about prescribing him a dewormer for the whipworms. Depending on the type of dewormer they have available, he may need to be dewormed again in the future. Finally, since we know you have whipworms in your environment you may consider switching him to something that covers whipworms on a monthly basis. Just in case, make sure your veterinarian is confirming the presence of roundworms (tapeworms can sometimes be confused for roundworms). If tapeworms are present, Koda will need a special medication. The two most common reasons for persistent infection with roundworms are not yet clearing the infection he was born with (yes, they can be infected in uterus) or your yard is contaminated with roundworm eggs (one study showed roundworm eggs remained infective for 20 years). Hookworms can live in the GI tract for a very long time, continually reproducing & causing damage to the walls of the gut. Removal is quite easy with an appropriate wormer like Pyrantel. Once the wormer hits the intestines, the worms will die. It is always a good idea to retreat in 2-4 weeks & then put your pup on a heartworm preventative that will also deworm on a monthly basis & prevent reinfestation.
