My dog whines when lying down or stretching. Is it an injury?

First of all, Luna is adorable! I'm sorry to hear that she seems a bit uncomfortable today. Since the focus of her crying and whining seems to center around jumping on or off of the bed, my main concern would be that she developed a back or neck injury. In some cases, dogs can be quite stoic with these injuries until they move or are handled in certain manners. Back injuries can also cause referred pain in the abdomen, which could explain why she pants (this can be a sign of pain) when you pick her up. It can be difficult to precisely determine if back or neck pain are present without a lot of training, and it is often overlooked at home. Since she is intermittently crying and panting, it sounds as though Luna may be relatively painful. I recommend taking her to the vet for an exam to try to determine the source of this pain so that treatment can be started. Until you can get to the vet, keep her restricted to a crate or small room and avoid allowing her to jump on or off of furniture or use the stairs, as this could exacerbate any underlying injury. Hello and thank you for your inquiry. I am so sorry to hear about poor Luna and her pain. Without knowing more about the amount of time she has been exhibiting signs of pain, I can answer this two different ways. If her pain has recently started within the past 24-48 hrs, yes she could have a pulled muscle or strained something and this would cause her to have pain when rising. If the pain on rising has been present for longer than 2 days, we would worry about other things like osteoarthritis or another disease of the musculoskeletal system. Siberian huskys are a breed of dog that can get hip or spinal dysplasia. These diseases can also cause the dog to be painful upon rising but they can than get better as the day progresses. If the pain has only started very recently, my advice is to keep her in a confined place for 24-48 hrs with minimal leash walking as the only activity. During this time, please do not give any OTC or other veterinary pain medicine because you do not want the pain to be masked. If there is no improvement after the confinement or if the signs you are describing have been going on for a long while, I encourage you to take her to your local veterinarian for physical exam and diagnostic testing like xrays as soon as possible. Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Luna's care today! Poor girl! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Poor Luna! It sounds like she needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause of her lameness. She could have a strain/sprain, dislocation, or a fracture and your vet can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. She might need an anti-inflammatory, splint, or possibly surgery to treat the problem. Hope she feels better soon!

He may have a muscle sprain. If he continues to behave in this manner, its best to get him seen b your vet for a full physical exam to try and localize the painful area and get her on pet friendly pain medication to help her get more comfortable. Since the lameness seems to be reoccurring, I would recommend you bring her into a veterinarian for an examination. Young dogs can often experience many conditions that can cause lameness. These can range from conditions such as panosteitis (growing pains) to congenital conditions such as elbow dysplasia, or OCD lesion of either the shoulder or elbow. Certainly a soft tissue injury (muscle strain or sprain) may also be the culprit. Regardless, it may be nice to see if the veterinarian can determine her "pain point" and localize where her lameness is coming from. They will also be able to give you prescription medications that ma help to ease her discomfort. I hope this information helps, good luck and I hope Luna gets some relief soon! :-)

It seems she is hiring somewhere. At her age arthritis can be starting but I would suspect a back injury or a soft tissue strain or sprain. The best thing is actually cage rest. No running or jumping, no playing even if she feels better after a few days. She needs rest for at least 2 weeks. I would advise getting her seen by your vet as they have medicine to help make her more comfortable and can localize he spot that is hurting to help you prevent it again in the future
