Why does my dog whine and follow my son, sniffing his feet?

Yes. It can be traumatic for young puppies to leave their mom, litter mates, and previous home that they knew. He needs to develop a new bond with you and learn a new home/environment/routine to gain confidence. Keep working with him and with time and becoming older he will learn. I recommend that you perhaps increase the length of his walks and also the frequency. Also, you could consider activities such as playing fetch to try to burn some of his energy. It is difficult to say for sure what the problem is since you are not able to find one particular area that is affected. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Bo to see if something can be found on a physical examination and then go from there in regards to diagnostics and treatment options. You could also monitor him for 24 hours and if there is no improvement, then schedule an exam with a veterinarian. If Mike's paws were wet then it could be from licking them or his living conditions are too wet. I would be sure he has shelter outside from the rain. It should have a roof and a floor slightly elevated off the ground and be dry. Check his feet daily for infection. Mike is likely howling because he is lonely outside, since he can not come in be sure he gets plenty of attention and exercise. Long walks twice daily and play time outside with you. Teach him basic obedience so when he starts to howl you can instruct him to go lay down in his dog house. I hope this helps! I wish you and Mike the very best!

Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Your description sounds most suspicious of generalized anxiety. There may have been something that spooked your dog recently to cause the behavior change, making him want to be near you all the time and causing him to seek reassurance. However, given his breed, it's also possible that he's just got too much pent-up energy - many high energy breeds can develop either anxiety or boredom if they aren't given an outlet for their energy and a way to tire themselves out. I recommend making sure your dog has a way to RUN his energy off daily. (with his breed and age, a walk probably won't cut it). You can take him running, or if he's ball motivated, throwing a ball is a great option to get him running. Fenced in dog parks are good options too. If tiring him out doesn't help reduce his clingy behaviors, I recommend consulting your vet and having them do a physical exam and likely some screening bloodwork. Sometimes panting, whining, and being generally clingy are the dog's way of telling us that something's not right, which can be the first sign of a disease or health problem. I hope this helps!
