My chihuahua whimpers with a bone and shoves it in my face. Why?

This is common dog behavior. They whine for various reasons and you must look at the rest of the body for clues to what it means. They whine for attention, anxiety or excitement. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It is possible that your puppy is just excited while playing with his toys, and so makes happy or whiny sounds. Some dogs and puppies will "play growl" as they play tug of war or other games and just do it due to excitement. This is a very normal behavior unless you are seeing signs of stress or pain during the play session. If you'd like your puppy to whine less when trying to get to a toy, you can try an activity of having him sit and wait, and then give the toy once he is calm. (This may take a few minutes for very excited puppies!) This will help to teach him that sitting and being calm will get him toys, while being too excited will not.

Having said that, if he is whining from pain, this is likely due to his maturing teeth. You can try using teething toys which help them when their teeth feel uncomfortable. If he lays the toys in your lap he probably wants to play. Chewing them on you may be a sign of disrespect. Dominance would be shown in that he would not listen to you, growl at you and not let you take away his food, stare at you, refuses to obey commands.

There are many reasons a dog may whimper without showing obvious signs of illness. Sometimes it is due to a mildly upset tummy, constipation, or any other injury or disease that causes pain. If you have felt all over his body and he seems quite bright in himself, I would simply keep a close eye on him. If you notice any signs developing such as lameness, inappatence, vomiting etc head to the vet for an examination.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is Cori showing his extreme excitement and joy of receiving this treat. All animals react differently. There is probably not much you can do about the whining/crying. For the trying to bury it I would make him calm down and lay down to eat it. As for stealing other dogs bones, I would have your friends pick up their dogs bone and be sure to teach Cori how to listen and come. If he sees a bone he should know to "leave it" and "drop it." She wants to play too, is talking to the others, and it is benign. She may be a bit timid which is why she does not join, but she is clearly wanting to play (wagging tail, excited, showing teeth). All that excitement!
